“There isn’t a better way to know what’s going on at the track than to be listening to the action on this great little radio.  I’ve used the RACEceiver SW 1600 for the past couple of years now and have recently started using the "NEW" TruScan and found it to be the perfect scanner for me.  It would be an asset for any local short track race fan or team member! “

Latest ASA Late Model Series Press Releases

Jeff Choquette leads all 125 laps to win his first career ASALMS Feature in the South Georgia 125 Presented by McDonald's Restaurants at South Georgia (GA) Motorsports Park.

By ASA Late Model Series
Cecil, Georgia (09/16/2007): The Sixth Race of the 2007 Season in the ASA Late Model Series Southern Division Presented by GM Performance Parts; The South Georgia 125 Presented by McDonald's Restaurants is now complete! This event was originally set for Saturday June 2, 2007 and was postponed due to raging wildfires in the area at the time and rescheduled for Friday September 14, 2007.

The 0.500 Mile Semi-Banked D-Shaped Paved Oval of the South Georgia (GA) Motorsports Park, located 30 Minutes North of the Florida/Georgia state line in Cecil, Georgia were gracious hosts of the South Georgia 125 Presented by McDonald's Restaurants. The 125-lap Feature also served as Day One of the Georgia Doubleheader Weekend with Day Two coming the next night at the New Senoia (GA) Raceway, located Southwest of Atlanta in Senoia, Georgia for the Senoia 125 Presented by FLF Racecars.

As for the South Georgia 125 Presented by McDonald's Restaurants, Loxahatchee, Florida Rookie, Jeff Choquette started on the pole and the current ASALMS Southern Division Overall and Rookie of the Year Points Leader would lead all 125 laps in a wild attrition and caution plagued event to take home his first career ASALMS Feature win.

It would be Choquette and fellow freshman, 19-year-old Travis Cope leading the 27-car starting field to Chief Starter, Burt Thomas' green flag to begin Day One of the Georgia Doubleheader Weekend as trouble ensured as soon as the field completed the first lap when Jeremy Gerstner and Travis Wilson got together in Turn Four to bring out the first of many cautions to be thrown throughout the event.

On the restart, Choquette would lead the field to the green with Cope trailing and the two rising stars would pull away from the rest of the pack to battle for the top spot. Beau Slocumb from near-by Juliette, Georgia began working his way through the pack from his seventh starting spot and was up to third by Lap 15 and quickly reeled in both Choquette and Cope as the Top Three checked out from the rest of the field.
<!--more-->
Over the next 40 laps, Slocumb worked on Cope high and low trying to come up with a way to get by the 19-year-old Weeki Wachi, Florida pilot. On Lap 55, Slocumb drove hard into Turn One to try the outside lane around Cope, but lost grip up in the third groove and looped his mount! Slocumb would be sent to the rear and with nothing to lose, Slocumb pitted for minor adjustments and fuel.

All the while, Choquette continued to set the pace with Cope following in his tire tracks when a new contender emerged in 14-year-old Max Gresham, who was as high as third at one point early in the race before Slocumb got by. Gresham was now in the final podium position and began working on Cope for second while Choquette continued to pace the field.

Coming down the backstretch on Lap 77, Gresham got sideways and overcorrected his car, resulting in the Milner, Georgia teenager doing a complete 360 down the straight away before coming to a rest in Turn Three! Gresham never touched the wall or another competitor, but did bring out the caution flag after he stopped! Later in the event, Gresham was involved in a separate incident and was forced to retire from the race.

From that point on the caution flagged came out with regularity as attrition and other factors began playing a role in the outcome of the 125-lap Feature. With Nine laps to go and after the 15th caution of the event, ASALMS Officials elected to bring the cars onto pit road to top off their fuel cells as fuel became a major concern for the ASALMS Southern Division Teams.

Brothers Racing Team teammates, 17-year-old John Wes Townley, who was sitting in third, and Beau Slocumb, who had worked his way back to up fourth spot, both elected not to take on extra fuel and it cost Townley dearly as the green came out on Lap 116!

Just three laps later on Lap 119, as Townley was battling with Cope for second, he slowed on the race track, out of gas as his teammate Slocumb drove by for third! Luckily for Townley, the 16th and final caution came out for a separate accident as Townley's machine slowed allowing the Watkinsville, Georgia teenager to limp into the pits for a splash of gas.

A final six-lap Shootout ensued as Choquette had been fighting off Cope the whole time and now Slocumb had rejoined the battle. Slocumb applied heavy pressure to Cope which allowed Choquette to pull away from the battling duo. At one point Slocumb managed to slide past Cope coming down the front stretch with three laps to go, only to be immediately passed right back by Cope heading into the next turn!

In the end, Choquette would survive 16 cautions and an attrition plagued event that saw only 12 cars take the checkered flag when all was said and done. Choquette would go on to lead all 125 laps to give the Loxahatchee, Florida freshman his first career ASALMS Feature Win and extend both his Overall and Rookie of the Year Points Leads heading into Day Two of the Georgia Doubleheader Weekend the next day in Senoia, Georgia.

Cope finished a career high second over Slocumb who made the last Six laps with Cope very exciting to watch! Chris Fontaine also had to come from the back twice after spins to finish fourth as Travis Wilson brought home fifth after his first lap spin!

Brandon Johnson came through with a sixth place finish as like Slocumb and Fontaine, he also came from the back of the pack after pitting. Jeremy Gerstner finished a career high seventh after a first lap spin while 16-year-old Brian Blum, Rob Partelo, and Townley, despite running out of gas late in the race, completed the Top 10.

Earlier in the afternoon in ARP Bodies/Aluminum Racing Products Qualifying, Pat Bourdow Memorial Rookie of the Year Points Leader in the ASALMS Challenge Division, Sean Murphy won his first ARP Bodies Fast Qualifier Award in the Southern Division and became the first driver this season to win the award in all three divisions of the ASALMS.

The Fort Lauderdale, Florida driver broke the track record with a fast 18.505 which measures out to 97.271 MPH. The track record is currently held by Landon Cassil, now driving for Hendrick Motorsports, who turned an 18...579 back on July 3, 2006. With 28 cars in attendance, all would start the 125-lap Feature and the GM Performance Parts Shootout was cancelled for this event.

Dange Hanniford

Born to race; it’s the only thing he can remember wanting to do. He was born and raised only minutes from “The Track Too Tough Too Tame”, so it would have been hard to not want to race. He’s been around racing his entire life, traveling to local race tracks with his family since he was six-weeks old.

Dange has an excellent working knowledge of a racecar, along with the driving ability to compete with the best. It’s not often that you find that in a driver these days. Dange has taken the old-school approach to racing, working his way from the bottom to the top, learning not only how to drive, but also how to build and maintain his cars along the way.

2006 He received an offer to run a limited schedule in the Hooters Pro Cup series for a southern division team. After qualifying for the Championship, Dange signed on to run for the Hooter Pro Cup Championship with NASCAR Busch team, Mac Hill Motorsports in the #65s Chevy Monte Carlo SS and finish 2 points short of the Rookie of the Year.

In 2007, Hanniford will run the full schedule in the Southern Hooters Pro Cup division and compete in his first NASCAR Busch series race at Richmond on May 4, 2007.

Smith Gains More Experience in New Hampshire Nextel Cup Race

LOUDON, N.H. (Sept. 16, 2007) -- Regan Smith finished 36th in Sunday's Sylvania 300 Nextel Cup race at New Hampshire International Speedway. It was the seventh career Cup start for the 23-year-old driver.

Smith, driving the No. 01 Principal Financial Group Chevrolet for Dale Earnhardt Inc., started 16th but fell back early and could not make up ground during the 300-lap race on the 1.058-mile oval.

"I was hoping for a better result, but it was another good learning experience," offered Smith. "We just couldn't get the Principal Financial/U.S. Army Chevy hooked up. I really appreciate all that this team has done for me this year. It's been great and I am looking forward to the future."

Smith is slated to drive a full-time Nextel Cup entry for DEI in 2008. He will be part of the team's four-car lineup that will include Martin Truex Jr., Paul Menard and the Mark Martin/Aric Almirola tandem.

"I have a great opportunity in front of me and I just can't wait to be working with my new teammates and drive every week," offered Smith. "Knowing what's ahead takes away a little of the sting from today's performance. Mark (Martin) keeps on preaching patience and that's the approach I am taking."

Speaking of the veteran Martin, he will be back in the 01 Chevy at the next two Cup races in Dover (Sept. 23) and Kansas (Sept. 30). Almirola will drive the 01 car in Talladega (Oct. 7).

The 01 DEI team is ranked 15th in Nextel Cup owner points.
