“There isn’t a better way to know what’s going on at the track than to be listening to the action on this great little radio. I’ve used the RACEceiver SW 1600 for the past couple of years now and have recently started using the "NEW" TruScan and found it to be the perfect scanner for me. It would be an asset for any local short track race fan or team member! “

1. West Bend, Wisconsin Driver, 20-year-old
Travis Dassow is the 2007 ASA Late Model Series Challenge Division Champion!
Lexington, Michigan (10/01/2007): The 2007 ASA Late Model Series Challenge
Division Presented by GM Performance Parts is Travis Dassow! The West Bend,
Wisconsin driver, officially clinched the 2007 title after taking the green
flag and starting the 2007 ASALMS Challenge Division Season Championships / USA
Digital 200 at the Five Flags (FL) Speedway in Pensacola, Florida on September
29, 2007.
This is the first Championship under the current T.D. Racing Development Team
and
Third straight ASALMS Challenge Division title for the former WalTom Racing
Team. In addition, this is also the third straight championships for Crew
Chief, Howie Lettow who took current NASCAR Busch Series drivers, Stephen
Leicht (2005) and Kelly Bires (2006) to their respective ASALMS Challenge
Division Championships.
"What a relief, I'm so happy this is over, now we can go celebrate!"
An elated Dassow said in victory lane after the USA Digital 200, which was won
by fellow Wisconsin driver, Charlie Menard. "I can't thank my crew enough,
this is a championship team and they know how to get the job done and they
proved that the last two years with Kelly (Bires) and Stephen (Leicht)!"
Dassow merely had to take the green flag in the 2007 ASALMS Challenge Division
Season Championships / USA Digital 200 was at the Five Flags (FL) Speedway in
Pensacola, Florida. Going into the 11th race of the Fifth Anniversary 2007
season, Dassow carried a nearly insurmountable 93 Point Lead over Colt James
and 97 markers ahead of Eddie Hoffman, the only other two drivers still with a
mathematical shot at the title.
In order for James or Hoffman to have a chance at Dassow, they both needed to
Qualify in the Top Five and for Dassow to Qualify Sixth or worse. Dassow
thwarted there efforts by timing in Third Quickest in ARP Bodies/Aluminum
Racing Products Qualifying in Pensacola, Florida and simply needed to take the
green in the 200-lap Feature to officially ice the title!

2. Fort Lauderdale, Florida driver, Sean Murphy is the 2007 Pat Bourdow
Memorial Rookie of the Year!
Lexington, Michigan (10/01/2007): The 2007 Pat Bourdow Memorial Rookie of the
Year in the ASA Late Model Series Challenge Division Presented by GM
Performance Parts is Sean Murphy! The Fort Lauderdale, Florida driver won the
prestigious Rookie title by a mere Two (2) points over fellow rookie, Derek
Thorn (1649-1647).
The 2007 ASALMS Challenge Division Season Championships / USA Digital 200 was
at the Five Flags (FL) Speedway in Pensacola, Florida and going into the 11th
race of the Fifth Anniversary 2007 season, Murphy carried a 22-point lead over
Derek Thorn in the chase for the freshman title.
Murphy, who was the fastest car all day in Practice, backed that up with his
Second straight ARP Bodies/Aluminum Racing Products Fast Qualifier Award of the
season by setting a new ASALMS track record on the abrasive 0.500 Mile
High-Banked Paved Oval in the panhandle of the Sunshine State. More
importantly, Murphy added Five (5) more points to his rookie points lead over
Thorn.
So going into the USA Digital 200, Murphy simply needed to stay withing Five
positions of Thorn and the Pat Bourdow Memorial Rookie of the Year title was
his. Things got complicated however on Lap 65 when Thorn briefly took the lead
from eventual winner, Charlie Menard and more importantly, erased Murphy's
extra five point cushion by earning five points himself for leading a lap so
now the margin was four positions for Murphy.
"I saw Derek take the lead and I thought, oh man I better get going here
or else I'm in trouble." Stated Murphy as he reflected on his quest for
the Pat Bourdow Memorial Rookie of the Year title. "I was thinking that if
he led the most laps, I may lose this deal, so I tried to turn up the wick some
and just see what happens."

Charlie Menard heads home to
LaCrosse for a chance at the ASALMS Northern Division title after winning his
second ASALMS Challenge Feature in the USA Digital 200.
By ASA Late Model Series
Pensacola, Florida (09/30/2007): The 11th and final points race of the Fifth
Anniversary 2007 Racing Season in the ASA Late Model Series Challenge Division
Presented by GM Performance Parts is now complete and the 2007 ASALMS Challenge
Division Champion and 2007 Pat Bourdow Memorial Rookie of the Year titles have
been decided and the Champions are crowned!
The home of the "Snowball Derby" and the "Snowflake 100",
the fast 0.500 Mile High-Banked Paved Oval of the Five Flags (FL) Speedway in
Pensacola, Florida served as gracious hosts of the 2007 ASALMS Challenge
Division Season Championships and the running of the USA Digital 200.
In a very thrilling 200-lap Feature that saw an ASALMS record Nine (9) lead
changes among Four (4) different drivers, Eau Claire, Wisconsin veteran,
Charlie Menard led 164 laps of the 200-lap affair and survived a ferocious
battle with Rookie contender, Derek Thorn to score his Second ASALMS Challenge
Division Feature of the 2007 Season in an event that saw the last 100 laps run
caution free!
Menard's first win came back on June 30, 2007 up at the Cayuga (ON)
International Speedway in Nelles Corners, Ontario/Canada in ironically the only
other race this season that saw the second half of the event go caution free!
"I tried really hard to take it easy and keep the tires on it and then all
of a sudden, here comes Derek (Thorn) so I really had to wheel this thing at
the end!" Stated the jubilant Menard in victory lane. "I love coming
down here and am so happy we were able to win this race. Plus I'm getting
married in a couple of weeks and we've got a big race in my back yard next
weekend for the North title, man I'm stoked." Menard added.
The Eau Claire, Wisconsin driver will now head to his home track of the
LaCrosse (WI) Fairgrounds Speedway for the 2007 ASALMS Northern Division Season
Championships / Oktoberfest 100 on Saturday October 6, 2007.
The 34-year-old trails Trent Snyder by 31 points for the 2007 North title and
in addition, Menard is only 10 markers back on Peter Cozzolino for second.
"I really believe that we can win that whole thing! I hope everything
falls into place and we can walk out of LaCrosse with a Championship!" He
ended.
2006 ASALMS Northern Division Champion, 18-year-old Jesse Smith and 2006 Five
Flags Pro Late Model Track Champion, Steven Davis led the field to the green
flag for the 2007 ASALMS Challenge Division Season Championships / USA Digital
200.
As the green flag waved, West Bend, Wisconsin driver, Travis Dassow also flew
across the start/finish line to officially clinch the 2007 ASALMS Challenge
Division Championship. This is the third straight ASALMS Challenge Division
title for the former WalTom Racing Team that took current NASCAR Busch Series
drivers, Stephen Leicht (2005) and Kelly Bires (2006) to their respective
championships.
As the field came down the front stretch to complete the first lap, Five Flags
regulars Ronnie Smith and Johanna Long came together bringing out the first of
only four cautions. Both drivers were able to continue after making several pit
stops under caution.
Davis had edged Smith across the start/finish line to take the early lead when
the caution came out and led the field back to the green flag on the restart.
Charlie Menard was then able to get by Smith and set his sights on Davis.
On Lap 16, Menard made his first of what would be many passes to take over the
lead as David tucked in behind the Eau Claire, Wisconsin veteran when the
second caution was thrown on Lap 23 when another Five Flags regular, Robert
Royce found the Turns 1-2 wall and collected Michael Annett in the process.
Royce was done for the night while Annett made several pit stops under caution
and was able to stay on the lead lap and would restart at the tail.
Davis immediately began applying pressure to Menard once the green was thrown
again and retook the lead on Lap 31. Menard fought back though and Four laps
later, the lead was Menard's one more time. Davis drifted high which allowed
Derek Thorn, who started Fifth to sneak by for second and now it was Thorn's
turn to pressure Menard.
As Menard and Thorn were negotiating lapped traffic, Johanna Long got sideways
in Turns 1-2 and spun and just nicked Thorn in the drivers door. Thorn was able
to continue and stayed in second place while Long went back onto pit road to
fix more damage.
The green flew again and Thorn wasted no time letting Menard know where he was
as the two drivers pulled away from the rest of the pack to battle. Thorn was
able to edge out just ahead of Menard on Lap 65 to briefly take the lead and
more importantly, earn Five (5) bonus points in his quest to win the 2007 Pat
Bourdow Memorial Rookie of the Year title.
Coming into the race, Thorn was 27 markers behind ARP Bodies/Aluminum Racing
Products Fast Qualifier, Sean Murphy and every point mattered. After leading
for one lap, Menard charged back by Thorn and retook the lead on Lap 66 as they
pulled out away from the field and began lapping cars at a rapid rate.
With Five laps to go until the halfway break, Thorn was again able to get my
Menard and retake the lead heading into the 10 Minute break. At Lap 100 it was
Thorn followed by Menard, Eddie Hoffman, Murphy, and 2007 ASALMS Challenge
Division Champion, Travis Dassow, the Top Five.
After the 10 Minute break for Four (4) Hoosier Racing Tires, a fuel cell full
of fuel, and any other adjustments the teams could make in that time span, the
green came back out again as Thorn led Menard and the rest of the pack into the
first corner.
Menard wasted no time getting back to the top spot as on Lap 103, Menard made
what eventually would be the winning pass by Thorn to retake the lead for an
ASALMS record Ninth lead change. From there, Menard checked out on the rest of
the pack as he began lapping cars at a rapid rate.
With 10 laps to go, Thorn mustered up one final charge towards Menard who was
having difficulty with a couple of lapped cars. By the time Menard was able to
work his way by the troublesome lapped traffic, Thorn had caught up to Menard's
back bumper and the battle was on.
Menard was determined however as the 34-year-old would fend off the late
advances of the 21-year-old Thorn to win his Second ASALMS Challenge Division
Feature of the 2007 Season in his Menards Home Improvement/Jack Link's Beef
Jerky/Floors of Distinction by Custom Surfaces-Ford Fusion.
"Lapped traffic was a bit of a problem tonight and I nearly fenced the car
over in Turn One with a few laps to go." Laughed Menard. ""I
have to thank all my guys, especially Crew Chief Chad Wood, they've all been
awesome all season long and now we're going home (LaCrosse) and see if we can
win that ASALMS North title! I really believe we can do it!" Menard ended.
"We gave Charlie (Menard) all we had but came up just a little bit
short." A dejected Thorn stated in victory lane. "We had a lot riding
on tonight, we've had a great rookie battle all season long with Sean Murphy
and he deserves the Pat Bourdow Memorial Rookie title!" Offered Thorn.
"I was going for the win and I knew I had too bring this home to have a
shot at the rookie deal. But we've had a good season and I can't thank 5K
Motorsports enough for this opportunity and congratulations to Murphy and the
S.S. Racing Team on there title!" The Lakeport, California driver ended.
Thorn settled for second while Travis Dassow sealed his 2007 ASALMS Challenge
Division Championship with a Third Place finish. Wheaton, Illinois veteran,
Eddie Hoffman finished Fourth and grabbed the runner-up position in the final
2007 ASALMS Challenge Division Points Standings. Michael Annett recovered from
an earlier incident to bring home the Hard-Charger Award of the Race and
rounding out the Top Five.
Fort Lauderdale, Florida Driver, Sean Murphy, who earlier in the day won the
ARP Bodies/Aluminum Racing Products Fast Qualifier Award, finished Sixth in the
Feature, which was good enough to win the 2007 Pat Bourdow Memorial Rookie of
the Year Championship by a mere Two (2) points over Derek Thorn!
Peter Cozzolino was seventh and was followed by Kris Stump, 18-year-old Keeton
Hanks, and David Odell turned in his career high finish by completing the Top
10.
Earlier in the day in ARP Bodies/Aluminum Racing Products Qualifying, Murphy
broke the ASALMS Track Record in Qualifying as the Fort Lauderdale, Florida
driver turned a 17.554 which measures out to 102.601 MPH. Josh Hamner held the
track record before Murphy reset the mark, as Hamner went a 17.663 back on May
12, 2006.
The month of October begins with both the ASALMS Northern and Southern
Divisions in action; only this time in two separate locations as for the only
time in 2007, two ASALMS Divisions will both be racing on the same day.
The ASALMS Southern Division cars and stars head out to the fast 0.375 Mile

Timmonsville, SC (September 22, 2007) – The “Best part of racing season” is just getting started! With the weather getting cooler and the points chasing getting tighter, the racing is even more exciting. The drivers are racing just as hard as the first day the season began, some even harder. Clint Coker got a late start and has brought challenge and intensity to the Stock 4 Cylinder Division. Jeff Melton is just getting his car dialed in and giving Regina June a run for her money in the Thunder & Lightning Series. Neal Anderson and Tiny Parker don’t cut any slack when they take to the track with Trey Malphus. The “Young Guns Series” is the breeding division of future stars of FMS. October 6th will be another great evening to watch the Palmetto Auto Auction Charger Series, John Newsome Action Ford/Mercury Thunder & Lightning Series, Stock 4 Cylinders, Road Warriors, and "Hair of the Dog" Energy Drink Young Guns. November will feature the culmination of the season with the final points races and the 8th Annual “SENECA Fall Classic Series”.
On September 29th the fans at FMS were treated to the FASTer Pastor special feature. Todd Fleming drove his Bethel Baptist Church/Honda CRX to his first win and accepted his victory in name of His Savory Jesus Christ. Fleming said, “It was a great race with Cyrus Shoffner as we drove through the turns. I’m probably more nervous now than I was when I gave my first sermon. Shoffner had a really fast car and led the first segment of the feature ‘til we got the inversion flag. It made for great racing, as we had to make our way back to the front. It was a fun time and I’m looking forward to our next race.” Ricky Locklair displayed his driving talent and took a seat in the #12sc of Weatherford Racing and put the car in victory lane just as he has many times before in the #50. Locklair’s own car broke during practice and the opportunity to drive the Weatherford machine came when brother Wayne vacated the seat to drive the #51 of Calvin Kelly/Todd Amerson. Wayne drove the open wheeled racer to a second place finish after holding off Curtis Peoples. Tyler English and Master Ricky Locklair rounded out the top five. Regina June scored a career record 20th win in the John Newsome Action Ford/Mercury Thunder & Lightning Series after a real challenging race with Jeff Melton, Brent Blalock, Mike Caddell and Wade Baker. Trey Malphus keeps holding the reins in the Road Warrior Series with Neal Anderson, Tiny Parker, Ralph Simmons and Michael Gainey racing in their hardest efforts. Clint Coker took last week off and made this week a second consecutive win in another close and exciting race with crowd favorite Josh Lee. Lee made several attempts, but Coker held on for the win. Adam Dowling didn’t let the two out of his sights and captured a significant third place finish after some exciting racing with Archie Adams Sr. and Emory Herring. Russ Turner Jr. drove for redemption after finishing second last week to Timmy Flowers and they swapped the finishing order this week. Austin Rodonis made his presence know as he positioned his self as a contender and finished a respectable third. Bubba Kolb and Nichole Dennis were fourth and fifth.
See great racing each week at FMS and introduce a friend to the excitement of local short track racing! The season is far from over with the 8th Annual “SENECA Fall Classic Series” on November 2, 3 & 4th. SPARTANBURG, SC
(October 2, 2007) – Twenty-two year-old Jeremy Clements recently received the
phone call that every young racer is fueled by – an opportunity to compete with
a premier NASCAR Busch Series’ team. Clements’ exciting news also had another
important twist as the Spartanburg native was set to drive for South
Carolina-based McGill Motorsports and reunite with his former ARCA RE/MAX
Series crew chief Ricky Pearson.
John McGill, owner of the experienced, privately-owned team watched Clements
tackle the fiercely competitive ARCA RE/MAX Series in his family-owned #3 Chevy
for several years but only recently had the opportunity to call on the racing
phenom after the team parted ways with former driver Brent Sherman.
“We hoped to put Jeremy in a car for part-time schedule prior to this event but
we were unable to secure a sponsor for him,” commented team owner John McGill.
“He is a real racer and amazing undiscovered talent. We are very
excited to have him as part of the McGill Motorsports’ #36 team. Our goal
is to have a strong performance at Lowe’s Motor Speedway that will hopefully
showcase Jeremy and our team to a potential sponsor who would be interested in
joining us in the NASCAR Busch Series for the remaining events of this season
and possibly 2008.”
While he may appear to be an unassuming veteran, Clements boasts an
accomplished résumé. He made his first NASCAR Busch Series start in 2003
at Pikes Peak, advanced four positions and was the youngest competitor in the
field. That same season he advanced a staggering 30 and 35 positions
respectively for a pair of third-place ARCA RE/MAX Series’ finishes at Lowe’s
Motor Speedway so the nearby North Carolina 1.5-mi oval is a fitting site for
his Busch Series return.
“I have known John and Nancy McGill for a few years and they are great people.
Their team is headed up by Ricky Pearson who is a great friend and my former
ARCA crew chief. When I received the call from John asking if I wanted to
drive at Charlotte, I didn’t hesitate to say yes,” Clements said.
McGill believed in Clements’ talents but had a renewed desire to help the
Palmetto State native following his impressive Pocono performance where
Clements’ apparent first win vanished as his #3 Chevy ran out of fuel just shy
of the checkered flag but still managed to earn a podium finish. The young
driver and his family-owned team rebounded the following weekend with their
first ARCA RE/MAX Series’ win at Nashville Superspeedway.
“John told me the Pocono race caught his eye so its nice to know that something
positive came out of that ordeal,” added Clements. “I feel like they have
better equipment than their recent results show so I hope to avoid any trouble,
stay on the lead lap and maybe open some doors for both myself and the team. If
we can secure sponsorship for the remaining races or 2008 season, I may be able
to enter the next phase of reaching my goal.”
No task is unattainable for the soft-spoken driver. Just as Clements was on the
fast track to securing a ride in one of NASCAR’s three premier divisions during
the 2004 season, he was seriously injured in a dirt late model incident where
the driveline pierced the cockpit of his racecar and severely damaged his right
hand.
“That experience could either make you stronger or break you. All that I
ever wanted to do and all that I know is racing cars so when doctors told me
that I may never do that again, the fighter instinct kicked in,” recalled
Clements. “I went through a lot of surgeries, therapy and hard work to return
here and am thankful for every opportunity I have. I said then that I
want to be better than I was before and have put in 110% to do that and I will
give my best effort behind the wheel of the #36 at Lowe’s.”
In addition to Clements’ Nashville win, he has also earned an impressive six
Top-5 finishes in only ten ARCA RE/MAX Series’ starts during the 2007 season.
Jeremy will be guaranteed a starting spot in the 43-car field at the upcoming
“Dollar General 300” as the No. 36 team is locked in due to their owner’s points’
standing but is confident that his team under the guidance of Ricky Pearson,
son of racing legend David Pearson, is capable of earning their place in the
show.
“We have yet to secure a sponsor for this event and John is taking a chance on
me and told me just to bring my seat and get ready to drive the car,” Clements
said. “Nowadays there are at least twenty [Nextel] Cup guys trying to
steal the show but if you want to compete in the Busch Series, that’s what you
have to compete against. They had to start somewhere and this is the biggest
break of my career so I’m not scared.”
Jeremy Clements will be behind the wheel of the No. 36 McGill Motorsports Chevy
for the “Dollar General 300” on Friday, October 12, 2007, and may return to the
ride for remaining 2007 events and a limited twenty-three race schedule next
season if sponsorship is secured. Organizations looking to get on the
advertising fast track and join forces with McGill Motorsports and Jeremy
Clements can get in on the action by contacting John McGill at (561) 741-6108
or online at http://www.mcgillmotorsports.com.

Kansas City,
Once the race began, Eric McClure immediately reported a tight handling condition on his racing machine, which forced him to have to “back up” the turn in order to the get the car turned. As a result, speed was sacrificed and McClure lost an early lap to the race leader.
When the first caution of the event occurred on lap 33, the Hefty® brand Chevrolet was brought onto pit road to receive a chassis adjustment, tires, and fuel. Once the race resumed, it didn’t take long for McClure to report a vibration in the car. McClure’s speed was significantly dropping off so the team decided to take the car to the garage to diagnose the problem. The exact problem couldn’t be pinpointed so the team decided to call it a day rather than risk an accident. They were credited with a 42nd place finish.
Eric McClure quotes:
“We made the race, which was huge for us obviously. Johnny Davis and the guys really busted their tails during and after practice and we made a lot of gains. We really weren’t that bad in the first practice, but we were hitting the cross member very hard, so we had to stiffen up the front of the car, which killed us.
I’m not sure what happened during the race. After the pit stop, the car just started dropping off from where it was and I felt a vibration in the car. It was either a valve spring or a gear or something, but we couldn’t find it in the garage, so we parked it. Nobody will see it in the results, but my guys worked hard and we got both cars in the show, which I’m proud of.”
"I`ve had to go on the road most of my racing career
to run against ( and beat) the best there is in dirt late model racing.
Now, they get to come to my backyard and I feel real good about my chances
& that $50,00 payoff . I great hometown crowd in my corner would sure make
it little easier'.

*THE FASTRAK DIRT LATE MODEL SERIES is based on the GM crate engine program
using both the 602 and 604 engine types. All teams utilize Goodyear Racing
Tires as the “spec tire” allowing teams tremendous savings in both engine and
tire expense. The National Championship of the FASTRAK RACING SEIRES is one of
the largest in the United States totaling over $350,000.00 for the 2007 season.
Dale Ball having been
injured earlier in the year, came back to race at Volunteer Speedway Saturday
night and he came back in style as he won the $2000 to win FASTRAK Late Model
Victory. Although Ball may have been the race winner, John Llewellyn was the
big winner of the evening taking home both the Mid East and Southern Regional
Championships winning a total of $10,000.
Ball qualified in the # 4 position with Shanon Buckingham taking the GM
Performance Parts “TOP GUN” award. Ball, was moved to the outside of the front
row during the Old 29 Golf Karts “Six Lucky Kids” Inversion on the front
straight before the main event.
The track itself had a tough night as the lower part of the track was terribly
dusty. The track was watered on the lower side in order to attempt to keep the
dust at a minimum. That set off a lap one wreck that took out nine cars for the
night including that of Jensen Ford, Warren McMahon, David McCoy, Matt Long
along with others. The incident had an effect on the out come of the Regional
Championships as the 187 of McCoy was out for the night.
Ball and Mays fought the entire race. Ball had a pretty comfortable lead in the
initial half but Mays was coming quick. Mays was under Ball lap after lap
making his bid for the lead several times but eventually ended up in the 14th
position after spinning coming off turn four. Ball eventually took the win with
Allen Champ, Shanon Buckingham, Jerry Broyles and John Llewellyn making up the
top five.
Both the Mid East and Southern Regional Championships were at stake this
weekend as this was a “combined” event. John Llewellyn in the #90 from
Knoxville TN held a very small margin going into the race as his lead was only
a very narrow 6 points over Lee Cooper (57) in the Southern Region and 5 points
in the Mid East Region for both $5000 to win Championships. David McCoy (187) was
still very much a player in the Championship chase as he won the Winter
Nationals in Feb and held a ‘ace in the hole’ as he won himself a drop race
during the year. McCoy including his ‘drop’ had a total of 361 points actually
putting him 4 points behind Llewellyn and moving him into 2nd in front of
Cooper. This was then night all of the top three were going to remember as the
Championship chase in both regions would be decided at this event.
Llewellyn had the best qualifying effort of the top 3 Regional Contenders as he
made his way into 9th spot. Cooper went to heat 1 and started on the pole. He
won the heat by a mile which put him 13th on the starting grid. As this
‘cinderella’ story would have it, McCoy was in heat 2, and moved into 4th
position with 2 laps left in his heat making his way into the main event
starting in the 20th position “Man I didn’t want to have to run a consi’ said
McCoy. I need to get in trough the heat the 54 slipped and that put me in the
transfer spot. That was exactly what we needed”.
There they were. All in the main event. Llewellyn 9th, Cooper 13th and McCoy
20th on the grid for the feature. Obviously Llewellyn was in better shape than
the latter two but no one had any guarantees and that’s exactly what happed
too. McCoy just happened to be in the wrong starting position as the middle of
the pack was torn to pieces as something happened. “I gave no idea where it
started” said Matt Long in the 25 car. “Cars were going everywhere and the next
thing I knew my car was actually on fire”. This sidelined the 187 of McCoy
ending his hopes for the night as well as the Regional Championship. “I hate to
see this happen to people” said FASTRAK Founder Stan Lester. “This Kenny Harris
owned teams has been a big supported of FASTRAK and its just tough to see
especially under the circumstances”.
With McCoy out, now it was all between Llewellyn and Cooper. Cooper fought and
clawed his way through the field from his 13th starting position being careful
while having to be aggressive at the same time. Cooper made his way through the
field and ended up right behind Llewellyn for the final 8 laps of the event and
worked and worked and although closed in bit by bit just could not make his way
past him. Cooper finished 6th right behind Llewellyn, resulting in finishing
only a small 7 points behind for the Championship. $5000 and 7points. Now that
is as close as it gets.

Myrtle Beach, S.C.—The
friendly aura that usually surrounds the Hooters Pro Cup garage area might seem
a bit tense on Saturday, Oct. 6 at Myrtle Beach Speedway. The backslapping and
bench racing will likely replaced by cold stares and secret meetings.
Sure, there will be two more races after the Mark Brooks Memorial Naturally
Fresh 250 presented by Black’s Tire & Auto Service, but none may be more
important with the top 10 drivers in the Championship Series are separated by
109 points.
And the drivers at the tail end of the top 10 come into the race with one
thought on their minds.
“We’ve got to win; top-5s aren’t going to cut it,” said ninth-place Benny Gordon,
who trails Bobby Gill by 100 points. “We’ve been a little off the last two
times there, but we’re going to test and we’ll be ready.”
Gill plans on being ready, too.
“Myrtle Beach is one of my favorite tracks,” said Gill, who has one win and
eight top-10 finishes in 15 Pro Cup starts at Myrtle Beach. “We weren’t that
good in June, but we’ve been working on something that will help us this time
around.”
But Gill’s competition will be stiffer this time around as well.
Unlike the June race at Myrtle Beach, the Naturally Fresh 250 is a Championship
Series event. The Championship Series started 2001, when the Hooters Pro Cup
Series split into two divisions, the Aaron’s Southern Division and Sears Auto
Center Northern Division.
At the end of each season, the top 30 drivers from both divisions are brought
together for a five-race playoff to crown the overall Hooters Pro Cup Champion
and Miller Lite Rookie of the Year. The format produces great racing and—at
times—heated rivalries.
“It’s like putting a bunch of bulls in a pin,” said Johnny Rumley, driver of
the No. 8n Snow King Chevrolet.
The bulls aren’t likely to stampede at Myrtle Beach Speedway.
The .538-mile track is known for chewing up tires in a matter of laps, putting
the premium on a driver’s ability to save his car for the end of the race.
“I wish every track we went to had the asphalt Myrtle Beach Speedway has,” said
Caleb Holman, a rookie from Abingdon, Va. “You have to drive the car at Myrtle
Beach. You don’t just push the gas and go.”
In the June race at Myrtle Beach Speedway, Michael Ritch navigated the tricky
speedway better than the rest, leading the final 32 laps en route to victory in
the Greased Lightning 200.
Ritch is another driver that needs to win to get back into contention. After
winning the Southern Division title, Ritch has opened the Championship Series
with two DNFs and dropped to 10th in points.
Adding to growing list of scenarios in Saturday’s race is that fact that the
event is 50 laps longer than the June race. And 50 laps at Myrtle Beach
Speedway can be an eternity.
“It’s going to be interesting for sure,” said Gordon, a four-time winner at
MBS. “You’re not going to know who has the best car until about 25 laps to go.”
Front gates will open at 3 p.m. for the general public. Awesome Awning Pole
Qualifying will start at 4:30 p.m. and be followed by a 50-lap Allison Legacy
Series race at 5:15 p.m. Fans will be permitted on the track for the Wraps INK
Autograph Session at 6:15 p.m. Pre-race ceremonies begin at 7 p.m. and green
flag will wave at 7:30 p.m. to start the Mark Brooks Memorial Naturally Fresh
250 presented by Black’s Tire & Auto Service.
Tickets can be picked up at all area Hooters and Black’s Tire & Auto
Service locations along the Grand Strand.
