To
most movie fans, Antonio Banderas’ decision to become involved with a Moto2
team this year may have seemed strange, but it makes sense when you think about
it: The actor is a native of Spain, where Grand Prix racing is huge, and coming
on as a principal in the Jack & Jones by Antonio Banderas squad was a way
for him to develop his lifelong passion for bikes. Banderas sat down with the
Spanish press prior to the Catalunya Grand Prix two weeks ago, and we were
there with a voice recorder. Following are excerpts:
A long-time bike-racing fan, Antonio Banderas welcomed the new Moto2
class by becoming a principal in the Jack & Jones team. • Andrew Northcott

On why he likes motorcycles:
I became interested in this little world when, as a youngster, I arrived in
Madrid and went to Jarama to see races with Kenny Roberts, Angel Nieto, and
others. This sport’s soul is the same as it was then. I think there’s a certain
romanticism and independence about it, and I still like the races because now I
see my riders fighting, and I try to make them feel good with the team…. It’s
very strange and abstract—like a common world and way of thinking. The ritual
of riding around Spain on a bike and making the sign of the rider is fantastic!
There’s something special about this little world.
On why he became involved in motorcycle racing:
Another team had approached me, but I decided not to accept. If there’s someone
to blame for my entering this world, it’s Dani [Devahive, the team manager],
because he knew how to push the right buttons in order to convince me. Also,
the project interested me; I think that life’s very short, and I like to live
it. I like this little world very much…. The subject of money doesn’t interest
me, and I’m not with the team for economic reasons…. There are other actors who
are fans of bikes as well, like Brad Pitt and George Cloooney, although I don’t
think they’ve become involved with teams yet.
On his role with the team:
I’m not anyone’s boss—I help the team with my presence and my image. When I
come in the garage, I feel like I do when I come on the set of a film that I’m
not in—like I’m hindering things! You’re there in fear, surrounded by people
who know exactly what they’re doing. You’re sort of there, but they’re just
doing what they do, so I don’t feel like an authority, or even like I have the
knowledge to give advice. I don’t know how to do that work.
Like Banderas, Jack & Jones rider has ties to both Spain and the
U.S. • Andrew Northcott photo
On the progress of his team:
We haven’t made the podium yet, but I’m very satisfied. We’re still waiting. We
knew that this would be a learning year, so there’s no problem…. We have a
culture of champions and idols, and unfortunately, it’s a class where a rider
makes the pole and then the next race finishes fifteenth. It’s something that
people have to understand, and when that happens, I believe they’ll realize
that’s how the world of motorsports is supposed to be.
On his plans for the future:
I’d like to continue. We knew we were starting with a new class and a new team,
and it hasn’t been easy. I think that for a couple of years, we’ll have to
continue in Moto2, but we’ll see what happens in the future with other classes.
There could be some surprises.
On growing MotoGP’s popularity in the U.S.:
There’s something about car racing that attracts [American] people that bike
racing still doesn’t have. Still, there’s definitely a strong passion for bike
racing in the U.S., and you see it at races like Laguna Seca. There are also strong
American riders. It’s interesting, and I know Dorna’s trying very hard to grow
the sport there…. I’m trying—I’m trying hard—to
do my part, and I’m looking forward to Indianapolis, where American fans will
get to see Moto2 for the first time this year.
On which rider he’d pick for a MotoGP team:
I’m only thinking about my riders. Everyone would love to have Valentino Rossi,
but Spain has been impressive this year. We have the best representation we’ve
ever had, but at this moment our riders are Kenny Noyes and Joan Olive, and I’m
very satisfied to have them on the team.
Noyes brought Banderas' team its first pole position at Le Mans this
year. • Andrew Northcott photo
On Spain’s current success in Grand Prix racing:
Our sport is in a great moment. Who could have predicted just a few years ago
that we’d have three drivers in Formula 1 or that [Rafael] Nadal would be
number one in the tennis world? Spain has taken a leap forward, and in bikes,
after the domination of England and Italy, I think the time of the Spaniards
has arrived—not just with motorcycles, but also in tennis, car racing, and
sports in general. For those who say it’s become a Spanish championship, I say
that we have the best riders in the world. Riders from other countries who want
to change that should try to, but at the moment, we’re the best.
On Valentino Rossi’s injury:
It will create a problem if Jorge Lorenzo wins the championship, because some
people will say that he wouldn’t have been the champ [if Rossi didn’t get
hurt]. I think he’d have won anyway, because he was already doing well, and
that would have been something very special. Let’s hope [Rossi] comes back
strong next year and that they can go head-to-head and decide it on the
asphalt.
On motorcycle racing in movies:
I’d like to do a film on motorcycles, although it would be expensive and would
need to have good sponsorship from important companies. Before I went to the
U.S., there was a Spanish director who tried to do one about this world, but
nothing ever came of it.
On what movie roles he would give Rossi and Lorenzo:
Rossi is sort of a comedian by personality, and Jorge, I don’t know…. I think
he could be good in a western—maybe the young bandit.

Figures
released by Duke Marketing, which operates iomtt.com on behalf of the Isle of
Man Government, show visits to the site and its TT Live! service increased to
939,381, up 42% compared with the 2009 TT.
TT
Live!, which offered fans the chance to listen to live commentary on the
internet while watching sector times and speeds as they happened, attracted
115,739 visits between May 29th and June 13th, an increase of 272% on the 2009
figures. The service, which was free during the 2010 TT, had an average of more
than 30,000 users during the races, peaking at 32,399 during the PokerStars
Superbike TT.
While
the number of visits makes positive reading, it is the numbers of unique users
– or different people – which truly shows the rapidly growing popularity of the
TT website. The figures for ‘unique users’ show how many individuals came to
iomtt.com during the TT, and, in 2010, the number of unique users was 342,944
people, up by 34%.
During
the two weeks of the TT, the site had more than 5 million page impressions and
data also shows that people were visiting more pages and spending longer
compared with previous years on the site. During the festival, TT Live! was
used by a total of 69,677 different people.
The
UK and Isle of Man accounted for the highest number of the visits, but the top
10 also included the US, Australia and Spain and more than half the visits from
America were new visitors to the site.
Duke
Managing Director Peter Duke, whose company signed a new multi-year contract to
continue running iomtt.com in 2010, said:
“The
figures for iomtt.com and TT Live! in 2010 are further evidence of the growing
popularity of the Isle of Man TT. To attract almost 1 million visits to the
site from nearly 350,000 different people exceeded our highest expectations,
and we are very pleased that the website, and especially TT Live!, is
contributing so much to the global awareness and popularity of the TT.”
“We
redesigned the website ahead of the 2010 TT to incorporate a new look, video
content and other improved features. We also provided online commentary and
live timings free of charge, and expanded our social networking presence with a
dedicated Facebook page and Twitter account, both of which were regularly
updated with news from the course and photos through each race day.”
“This
commitment from the team at Duke has brought extremely positive feedback from
site visitors from all over the world. In just a handful of weeks, our Facebook
group has built up more than 16,000 fans and the 34% increase in people using
iomtt.com speaks for itself.”
Mr
Duke added:
“The
Isle of Man TT is a truly international event, and the use of iomtt.com and TT
Live! clearly shows that. During the 2010 TT we had visitors from 179 countries
and territories – including the Arctic!”
“This is only the first year of our new contract, and the improvements made so
far have brought excellent results. We will be building on the 2010 TT to
deliver even more for the hundreds of thousands of TT fans, new and old, all
over the world through iomtt.com.”
Isle
of Man Tourism Political Member Geoff Corkish said:
“These
figures are very encouraging and show that the programmes that we have put in
place are increasing the global audience and commercial value of the TT. This
will provide tangible benefits not only to the event itself but also the Isle
of Man as a whole.”

LAKE
ODESSA, MICH. (July 14, 2010) – Scott Powersports/DR.D/Pit Posse/Monster
Energy’s Johnny Lewis headed to Michigan this past weekend with aspirations to
compete in his first-ever AMA Pro Grand National Championship (GNC) Flat Track
Twins Half-Mile main event after two previous tries this season. With a new
motor in his Scott Powersports Kawasaki 650 custom flat-tracker, this athlete
came away with an impressive seventh among the nation’s elite, veteran racers
at I-96 Speedway in Lake Odessa, Michigan on Saturday, July 10.
After
two previous outings on the Scott Powersports Kawasaki 650, the Springfield
Mile and the Lima Half-Mile, Lewis’ crew did extensive work on bike set-up and
built a brand-new motor with the goal to make the main event in Michigan. At
Springfield in May, Lewis had a bike failure. The crew was able to resolve the
motor failure for the next race. Then in Lima last month, Lewis made significant
progress just missing out on the main event.
On
Saturday night at I-96 Speedway in the Mecca of the flat track world and
surrounded by the infamous Michigan Mafia, Lewis was destined to improve. He
qualified in practice at 17th place among more than 50 competitors. On the
half-mile oval, a return to this track for the AMA Pro GNC series after a few
years hiatus, Lewis rode hard and smooth on his Custom Axis Racing
Shocks-suspended Kawasaki 650 to earn a sixth-place. That was not enough to
advance him directly to the main as only the top four finishers transfer
directly.
The
Scott Powersports crew made some more adjustments and Lewis headed out for the
semi. This was the last chance to make the main event. Lewis made his way to
the front right away and was able to run with fellow Kawasaki-mounted rider
Bryan Smith, the only other top competitor on Japanese-manufactured equipment.
Lewis held on for second, allowing him to continue his night and enter the
25-lap main event, the first-time ever AMA Pro GNC Twins main for the recently
turned 21 year-old.
In
the main event as the initial laps ticked off, Lewis was working his way
through the pack. Then oil spilled on the dirt oval which caused him to crash.
The race was red flagged. On the restart, Lewis was on the fourth row. He kept
in a fast groove line and was soon running in the top ten. With raw
determination and pure talent, Lewis made his way to seventh with his fastest
lap during lap 24, the white flag lap. At the checkers, Lewis earned seventh on
his white and red custom Kawasaki flat-tracker.
“Mike
Scott and crew worked hard all week and even on race day to get the bike ready
with the new motor,” said Lewis who wears number 10 in custom Alpinestars
leathers during Twins races. “It was only my third time racing this bike and we
started off with a whole new 650cc motor competing against mostly 750cc bikes.
Every time I was on the bike, we gained some speed and figured out something
new to do to make my performance better. Finishing and then earning a top ten
in my first half-mile main is awesome!”
After
eight events run in the AMA Pro GNC Flat Track Championship, Lewis sits in
ninth place in the standings with 65 points. This is already an accomplishment,
considering he missed round three and did not make the main events in rounds
four and five. Additionally, in the AMA Pro GNC Singles standings, Lewis is in
seventh place, only 12 points back from third place.
The
next stop on the circuit will be round nine at the AMA Pro GNC Calistoga
Half-Mile at the Calistoga Fairgrounds in Calistoga, California on Saturday,
July 31. Race fans be sure to watch Scott Powersports/DR.D/Pit Posse/Monster
Energy’s Johnny Lewis on the #10 white and red custom Kawasaki 650
flat-tracker. Stop by his pit area to pick up a custom Johnny Lewis poster by
Axis Designs. Keep posted to Lewis on Twitter at www.twitter.com/johnnylewis21
and visit his website at www.johnnylewis.org. You may also “friend” him on
Facebook by searching under “Johnny Lewis.”
About Johnny Lewis
Professional
athlete Johnny Lewis of Coatesville, Pennsylvania showed last year in his
rookie season in the AMA Pro Flat Track Championship that he can develop to be
a force in the series. Prior to flat track, he raced in the AMA Pro Supermoto
Championship for three full seasons where he was the youngest to ever win in
the Unlimited Class. In 2010, Lewis will race the number 10 Scott
Powersports/DR.D/Pit Posse Honda CRF450F in AMA Pro Flat Track Singles
Championship events and the number 10 custom Kawasaki Ninja 650 flat-tracker in
select AMA Pro Flat Track Twins races. Lewis would like to thank his sponsors

Willows, CA. – July 11, 2010 – The Pilot
125GP race started with Jake Lewis on pole. Nobi Iso, Peter Lenz and
Debra Barton filled out the rest of the front row. Lewis led the field through
turn one on his Veloce Racing Aprilia with teammate Iso in tow. Barton,
who was impressive all weekend, suffered a crash in turn six when another racer
collided with her. With the Aprilias out in front, Lenz had his hands
full with Andre Ochs and Lex Hartl, in a knock-down, drag-out battle for the
final podium spot. With two laps to go, Hartl started to fade back
leaving Ochs to continue pressuring Lenz for third. Lenz powered forward
and held on for third place. Meanwhile, at the front, Iso was looking
comfortable following Lewis, who was looking for his fifth straight win of the
year. Lewis even set a new 125GP track record with a
1:55.275. On the white flag lap, the crafty veteran Iso closed the
small gap to Lewis. Iso exited the final turn in perfect position, and
drafted past his teammate at the checkered flag for the win.
Peter
Lenz won a fantastic battle with Andrea Ochs in the REV’IT! Moriwaki MD250H
Powered by HONDA race. Lenz led the pack early on, until Ochs passed on
lap 4. On the last lap, Lenz re-passed Ochs coming down the hill in the
back section of the track. With one final Herculean effort, Ochs dove
into turn 14 underneath Lenz. But Lenz came out of the final turn in the lead,
and held it down the front straight to claim victory.
In
the Rising Sun Cycles / GPTech Moto3 race, Jake Lewis was looking to return to
his winning ways. Yet again, he led the field at the start. Nobi Iso, was
determined to repeat his earlier performance and on lap 2, threw down the
fastest lap of this race. However, Lewis rode consistently fast out
front, and managed his sizable lead over Iso and claimed the win. Lex
Hartl ran a solid race for third while being chased by Michael Aquino on his
Yamaha TZ250, powered by a 450 four-stroke.
Vince
Rolleri was the pre-race favorite in the Moto Liberty/RS Taichi 250GP race as he
has won every race he has entered this season. Rolleri stormed off to the
front in usual fashion while Kevin Winter and Andre Benguerel battled for
second. Rolleri looked set to continuing his perfect season, when the
fickle finger of fate stepped in and the race announcer said, “Rolleri has this
one in the bag”. Rolleri’s TZ250 suffered a mechanical failure, and he
was forced to abandon the race. With a few laps to go, Winter was leading his
hard fought battle with Benguerel and was able hold on for his first win of the
season.
The
USGPRU would like to thank the AFM for hosting an excellent weekend of racing,
particularly Shawn, Barbara, Paddy and Mary for all of their hard work and
hospitality!
