GEORGIA STOCK CAR RACING JULY 22, 2010

AMS_7x2_AdSend news to Dale Terry   ddrrtt@earthlink.net

Thanks to Atlanta Motor Speedway for sponsoring this issue.

Phillip Swofford, of Bremen, is the new leasee and promoter at West Georgia Speedway in Whitesburg. He's already at work on a track facelift, painting everything and upgrading the bathrooms.

Swofford has been involved with sportsman class racing in recent years, and his McKenzie Auto Parts has had a parts trailer at area tracks for the past two years.

He's making West Georgia into a Friday night track, and will have divisions and rules similar to Saturday night at nearby Senoia: late

models, mod minis, hobby, B-cadet, pur mini, and enduro street stocks.

He hopes to include a crate class too.

West Georgia was the loser when Senoia went to dirt this year. A low fan and car count led to a cut in the purse one Sat. night.  The next week only five cars showed, and the track never recovered, even after trying a switch to Friday nights.

As a sign, Swofford posted on Facebook:  "Want to let all the drivers and fans know that the restrooms will be cleaned every week and in working order. Will be taking pics of improvements to the track over the next 3 weeks before we reopen and posting them on facebook ... no more intermissions"

Georgia-based Legends competitors nearly swept the show at the Legends Million race at Charlotte Motor Speedway, with local drivers winning the Semi-Pro/Young Lions A-Main feature and finishing second in the Legends Million A-Feature and Masters A-Main race.

Sean Rayhall, of Winston, the current Young Lions points leader, won the Semi-Pro/Young Lions A-Main feature, and $25,000, at the Legends Million event. Rayhall dominated the majority of the race, but spun his tires on a late-caution restart and relinquished the lead to fellow Thursday Thunder competitor Kason Plott, of Marietta. However, Plott would soon be slowed by lapped traffic, allowing Rayhall to move ahead for the lead with just four laps remaining.

Doug Stevens, of Griffin, better known now for his Legends car-setup wizardry than his five-career Thursday Thunder championships, led from the pole for 89-of-100 laps in the Legends Million A-Feature before eventual winner Daniel Hemric, of Kannapolis, NC, pulled inside Stevens with just 11 laps remaining. By finishing second, Stevens claimed a $100,000 prize and held off NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver David Ragan who finished fourth. Evan Swilling was 14th, Justin Swilling was 25th, and Adam Gay was 26th.

There was some heartbreak, too, for Casey Roderick, who wasn't competitive in his Doug Stevens-prepared car.

Austin Hill, of Winston, qualified third, but was DQ'd in tech.  He started in the rear in his heat and in the B-main, and made it to third, but only the top two advanced.

Will Prance, of Canton, who graduates from his home schooled high school in August, came close but missed the feature.

Beau Slocum, formerly of Macon, started on the front row of his B-main, but didn't make the show.  He's newly married and moved to Charlotte, where he's a bodyman for the NASCAR truck of Ricky Stenhouse.  Beau was going back to Houston, TX, this week for his cancer check-up.

Another race: unlikely.  Small crowd due to rain and "only" 300 entries.  It was on SPEED TV and will surely sell a few more Legends cars.

Lanier Speedway and NASCAR Sprint Cup racer David Ragan host the 4th annual Ice Cold Shiners’ Bowl Jan. 8-9, 2011, featuring the Pro Late Models battling it out for 100 laps around the tough 3/8th’s mile asphalt oval.  Many of your local favorite divisions will be on hand to warm up the chill bumps and lay the bumper to their closest rivals in the New Year.

Speedfest 2011, for Pro Late Models and Super Late Models, takes the green flag on January 28th, 29th and 30th.  Speedfest 2010 saw one of the most exciting finishes in the Pro Late Model twin bill of the Speedfest feature, as local favorite Casey Roderick held off the hard charging NASCAR star Kyle Busch until a late race spin sent Roderick and Busch to the back allowing another local favorite Greg Simpson to take the checkered flag for his 2nd Speedfest victory. The Super Late Models will once again fill out the second half of the Speedfest bill, as they battle for 250 laps around the historic Lanier National Speedway.  Last January, Busch captured the checkered, the first of his many wins in 2010.

This Friday Night at Lanier: Anyone Can Race!!!!

          < DRIFTING. Pro's only though.

< 150 FEET SPECTATOR DRAG RACE. This will be a two-car drag race down the front-straight of LNS. Just as all drag racing, the winner moves on to the next round and the loser is out.

< FULL LAP SPECTATOR RACE. This is the same thing we do every Saturday night. We line up two cars on the start-finish line and they will race

1 lap around LNS. There will be no warm-up laps, you will just pull onto the track and you will be lined up by an official either on the inside or outside, and when the flagman gives you the green light the race has started. The winner will move on to the next round, loser is done.

< SPECTATOR QUALIFYING. We will put a transponder on your car to accurately see who will be able to turn the quickest lap. One car on the track at a time.

<BURNOUT COMPETITION. The burnout competition will take place on the front straight. The winner will be determined by the audience applause.

< PEOPLE'S CHOICE CAR SHOW. There will be only one category. People's choice. It will be open to any type car, truck, or motorcycle. Winner will be determined by who receives the most votes.

< SWIMSUIT COMPETITON. No explanation required. Winner will receive $500 cash.

"There's been great work back at the shop, and this is a great deal for Gresham & Associates. I'm glad to come out here and rock the socks off of these guys."

Augie Grill knows the fast way around Gresham Motorsports Park as he proved again in the U. S.  Auto Sales World Series of Speed 100, the third race in the CRA Super Series Southern Six Pack Series Saturday night.  Grill, the current track record holder, was the second fastest qualifier behind TJ Reaid.  He started in the seventh position but found the lead on the 34th lap after several laps of side by side racing with early race leader Bubba Pollard.  He then put on a clinic of how to find speed on the famed Georgia half mile running out to strong leads and only being seriously challenged on restarts as he went on to lead the rest of the race for his second CRA win.

TJ Reaid set fast time, and finished second on the track, but failed

post race tech and has been officially credited with finishing 20th.

That change moved bubba Pollard to second, Ryan Blaney to third, Jeff

Fultz to fourth and Jimmy Weller to fifth in the posted results.

The third annual Lakewood Speedway Reunion is August 7 at the  Georgia Racing Hall of Fame, located in the Dawsonville Municipal Complex.

This year, we plan to honor the Flock Brothers of NASCAR fame, Tim, Bob and Fonty, who were among the winningest drivers of record at Lakewood.  Along with the three brothers, we plan to honor the other members of the Flock family that made them a unique group in the annals of  Georgia Auto Racing.  We're also anticipating a big turnout from the motorcycle community, as several former two-wheel racers have said they plan to come out to the event this year for the first time as we also prepare to induct our first champion motorcycle racer, Ted Edwards, into the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame in October.  Cost to attend is $15, which includes a catered meal from the  world famous Dawsonville Pool Room.  www.georgiaracinghof.com.

With this being his second season of racing in the Pro Challenge Series, after coming over from the quarter midge ranks, John Morgan Tullis finally claims victory at Watermelon Capital Speedway Saturday night.  While in victory lane he wanted to give special thanks to his dad, J L, for the hard work and effort he puts into my racing program.

"I'd also like to thank Russell Fleeman for teaching me how to get around the racetrack with this type of car.  It was a major change from the quarter midgets I was accustomed to and my learning curve was coming around slowly.  However, with Russell's help I've learned car control and patience on the track which has helped me progress in what is considered a mini late model.  Hopefully, now that I've finally

broke the ice, this will be just one of many to come.

Johanna Long, the defending Sunoco Gulf Coast Champion as well as 2009 Blizzard Series Champion, will make her debut in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Friday at O'Reilly Raceway Park, not far from

Indianapolis,   She will drive the Ballew Motorsports entry number 15

in the AAA Insurance 200.  The race will be televised via the Speed Channel and begins at 6:30 pm CDST.

Promotion idea:  Beginning this Saturday and continuing until further notice, the pit gate will open at 1 p.m. and practice on the quarter-mile oval will begin at 3 p.m. Spectator gates will continue to open at 4 p.m. with the first race at 7 p.m., but the pre-race on-track autograph session has been suspended.

appreciates everyone’s understanding and cooperation.

Promotion idea: Thank you again for your support of Mobile International Speedway. This message is all about a special night coming up July 31, known as "Kids' Night".  Children eleven years of age and under will be admitted to the grandstand free.  On the same night the kids eleven years of age and under will be given an opportunity to ride in a race car or the MIS pace car.  They need to present a passing report card to be eligable for the ride.  Truthfully though, some of us had report cards there were not so terriffic, so even if the report card is not the best, a promise to work hard to do better in terms of school work, will be acceptable.

Jimmy Owens, of Newport, TN, held off a late-race charge from Chris Wall of Springfield, LA, to win the Fourth Annual CMH "Diamond Nationals" on Saturday Night at Lucas Oil Speedway.  Owens took home $10,000 for his seventh Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series win of the season.  Earl Pearson, Jr. of Jacksonville, Fl finished third, followed by Billy Moyer of Batesville, AR and Brady Smith of Solon Springs, WI.

Jac Haudenschild Sidelined by Broken Right Hand

Concord, NC-July 22, 2010- Jac Haudenschild, who has won twice this year with the World of Outlaws, will miss a couple of weeks of action after suffering a broken bone in his right hand. Haudenschild is currently ninth in the World of Outlaws championship standings on the strength of 19 Top-10 finishes with eight of those being Top-Five performances.

The Hall of Famer took a wild ride at LaSalle Speedway on July 8 in the finale of the Showdown for the Bud Crown, getting into the turn three fence and wall very hard. He competed in a few races following that accident, turning in a very gutsy performance in the Knight Before the Kings Royal, charging from the 23rd starting spot to finish sixth, while driving with significant pain and discomfort in the hand.

"It's pretty disappointing," said Haudenschild. "We've felt good in the car this year and been fast and have won a couple of times. We're looking forward to getting back to racing in a few weeks."

Haudenschild hopes to return to the seat for the Knoxville Nationals at the famed Knoxville Raceway in Iowa, August 11-14 then be back in World of Outlaws action at Nodak Speedway in Minot, North Dakota on August 20-21 in the Magic City Showdown.

The World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series is brought to fans across the country by many important sponsors and partners, including: Armor All (Official Car Care Products), Chizmark & Larson Insurance , Goodyear Tires (Official Tire), SuperClean (Official Cleaner-Degreaser), VP Racing (Official Racing Fuel); in addition to contingency sponsors, Jake's Custom Golf Carts, KSE Race Products, Penske Shocks , R2C Performance, Racing Electronics, S&S Volvo; Engine Builder's Challenge participants Don Ott Racing Engines, Kistler Engines, Shaver Specialties and Speedway Engines; and Chassis Builder's Challenge participants J&J Auto Racing, Maxim Racing and XXX Race Company.

World of Outlaws Late Model Series Stars Will Chase Central PA Speedway’s Trademark Trophy On Tues., July 27

Carved Wooden ‘Big Bear’ Provides Unique Prize For National Tour’s First-Ever Visit To Tim Bainey Sr.’s Track

CLEARFIELD, PA - July 22, 2010 - Tim Bainey Sr. and his son, Dan, are ready to welcome the World of Outlaws Late Model Series to their Central PA Speedway for the first time on Tues., July 27.

And to pique the interest of the national tour’s superstar invaders, the father-and-son team will put more on the line than just the $8,000 top prize for the evening’s 40-lap A-Main that kicks off the five-race Ohio-Pennsylvania Speedweek.

Now in their third season at the helm of the four-tenths-mile oval, the Baineys have turned a unique trophy presentation begun by their promotional predecessors into a post-race tradition. Every feature winner at the track receives a distinctive three-foot-tall, 50-pound wooden bear created for CPS by a local carver – a fact that all the drivers in the historic WoO LMS event’s field will be well aware of when the green flag drops.

Pocketing the first-place cash is always a racer’s primary objective, but earning a special keepsake trophy allows the sweet memory of a victory to linger on. Just ask Shane Clanton of Fayetteville, Ga., the lone WoO LMS regular who owns a Central PA Speedway ‘Big Bear’ thanks to his triumph in the track’s unsanctioned 2006 Yankee Doodle 50.

“I have it sitting in the living room of the house,” said Clanton, a three-time winner on this year’s WoO LMS. “It’s right there next to my trophies from the World (100 at Ohio’s Eldora Speedway) and the Firecracker (100 at Pennsylvania’s Lernerville Speedway).”

Clanton, 34, will be part of a star-studded group of WoO LMS travelers hoping to hoist the wooden bear after Tuesday night’s program, arguably the biggest dirt Late Model event in Central PA’s modern dirt-racing era. Built in 1969 as a dirt track, the speedway was paved in 1986 and operated under several promoters until being shortened slightly from its half-mile size and covered with clay prior to the 2006 season.

Tim Bainey Sr., a 52-year-old who owns a Philipsburg, Pa.-based trucking company and has a long history as both a driver and car owner in local, regional and national racing levels, purchased the track before the start of the 2008 campaign. He installed his son, Dan, 29, as the speedway’s director of operations and the two have combined to present a successful series of special events that will reach its zenith with the arrival of the WoO LMS.

The elder Bainey’s racing background is primarily with the pavement scene – he raced Late Models on Central PA Speedway’s asphalt, competed in ARCA Racing Series events at such famed tracks as Daytona, Pocono and Atlanta and in recent years fielded vehicles that his son, Tim Jr., drove in USAR ProCup Series and NASCAR Truck Series action – but he recognized the stature of the World of Outlaws brand name in the dirt-track world when Dan Bainey suggested it was time to host a show for the renowned series.

“I thought a World of Outlaws race could be huge for us and I asked my dad what he thought,” said Dan Bainey, who has served as crew chief for his father and older brother’s USAR and Truck Series racing efforts over the past decade. “He was all for it. The World of Outlaws is pretty much the NASCAR of dirt, so it’s a big deal to bring the series to our track.

“Ever since we announced the World of Outlaws date, it’s been the talk around here. We’re expected a huge crowd to come out.”

There’s plenty of room for spectators at Central PA, which has a long, high set of bleachers running the length of its homestretch and a hillside drive-in section that stretches around most of the remainder of the track. The drive-in is extremely popular for its scenic view of the action, prompting “fans to start lining up in their cars early in the morning every time we have a race,” said Dan Bainey.

The racetrack, meanwhile, is “big and fast,” described Clanton. “It has a little bit of everything to make it an exciting place.”

Clanton is one of five WoO LMS regulars with experience circling Central PA Speedway’s ribbon of dirt. He’s joined by Chub Frank of Bear Lake, Pa. (finished second in a 2008 event after going to rear twice), Clint Smith of Senoia, Ga. (fifth in 2006 Yankee Doodle 50), 2006 tour champion Tim McCreadie of Watertown, N.Y. (17th in 2009 Yankee Doodle 50 but had to change a blown engine after a heat win) and 2009 Rookie of the Year Russell King of Bristolville, Ohio, who hasn’t run a dirt Late Model at the track but does have two big-block Modified starts there.

Outlaws who will be seeing Central PA for the first time, meanwhile, are defending champion Josh Richards of Shinnston, W.Va., Darrell Lanigan of Union, Ky., Steve Francis of Ashland, Ky., Tim Fuller of Watertown, N.Y., Rick Eckert of York, Pa., rookie sensation Austin Hubbard of Seaford, Del., and Brent Robinson of Smithfield, Va. Rookie Jill George of Cedar Falls, Iowa, expects to miss the event because she has been invited to participate in a Roush-Fenway test/tryout.

The WoO LMS standouts will face a tough array of regional talent – none tougher than defending O’Reilly All-Star Late Model Series champion Robbie Blair of Titusville, Pa., who is undefeated in four 2010 appearances at Central PA. He owns victories in All-Star events on May 30, July 2 and July 3 as well as an unsanctioned event on June 20.

Other drivers expected to enter Tuesday’s action include Rick ‘Boom’ Briggs of Bear Lake, Pa., who has a pair of top-five finishes this season in All-Star competition at Central PA; Gregg Satterlee of Rochester Mills, Pa., who finished third in the May 30 All-Star event; and Mike Knight of Ripley, N.Y.

Pit gates are scheduled to open at 3 p.m. and spectator gates at 3:30 p.m. on Tues., July 27. On-track action is set to get the green flag at 7 p.m. and will include racing for the four-cylinder division.

General admission is $26 and $12 for ages 11-15, with kids 10-and-under admitted free of charge. Pit passes will be $35.

Central PA Speedway is located just west of Clearfield, Pa., off Interstate 80.

Labonte, TRG to re-team for four-race deal

After parting ways in June, Bobby Labonte and TRG Motorsports have agreed to a four-race deal: Pocono (Aug. 1), Michigan (Aug. 15), Atlanta (Sept. 5), and Texas (Nov. 7). For all four races, the No. 71 Chevrolet will feature the familiar red-and-black paint scheme of TRG sponsor TaxSlayer.com.

One and only Indy makes winning paramount

This week, NASCAR will make its 17th trip to the famed Brickyard, but what the track lacks in regard to decades of stock-car history is more than offset by its prominence in the motorsports community. From the first race there, drivers have coveted a Brickyard 400 victory nearly as much as they have a Daytona 500 win and as with every race, only one man will leave Indianapolis Motor Speedway with the trophy.
