WEEDSPORT, NY- Racing returned Sunday night to the Cayuga County Fair Speedway after a two week hiatus. As the racing returned so did the excitement. Local Fire and Rescue personnel were recognized Sunday night during Fire and Rescue night. All personnel with proper ID received free admission to the races. One more way Cayuga County Fair Speedway is able to say thank you to the local race fans and community.
Fans attending Sunday, had an added bonus as they entered
the grandstands where Ryan Newman's NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Tornados show car
made its second of three 2010 appearances at DIRTcar Northeast Central New York
Tracks.
The Stewart/Haas operation, based in Kannapolis, North Carolina, has dispatched the Tornados sponsored #39 to weekly short race tracks all over the northeast in promotion of their new sponsor. Race fans that came to Cayuga County Fair Speedway were able to sample these tasty treats in front of the grandstands.
The Stewart Haas/Ryan Newman NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Tornados sponsored cars will also make appearances at the Canandaigua Speedway on Saturday, August 7.
Fan interaction hit its peak Sunday night during the one-on-one spectator races. Race fans had a rare opportunity to take their vehicle out on the track and race like the stars they watch every weekend. The winner of the spectator race took on the Summit Auto Chevy Impala Pace Car for a two lap dash.
Action continued throughout the night, especially as Danny Johnson held off a very determined Matt Sheppard at the finish to win the 35 lap DIRTcar Modified feature. Johnson took the lead on a lap eight restart from Shannon Whaley and beat Sheppard to the finish line by .16/100's of a second. It was Johnson's third win of the 2010 season at Cayuga County Fair Speedway. Third was Alan Johnson followed by Jimmy Phelps in fourth. Phelps had to go into the pits midway through the race to change a right rear tire. Fifth was Eric Fisher.
Justin Wright was "right on" last Sunday night at CCFS, winning the 25 lap DIRTcar Sportsman feature, Wright had to endure a lap 20 caution period with Earl Rudy right behind him. On the restart, Wright pulled away and would finish better than three seconds ahead of Rudy at the finish. Taking third was Tom Juhl and fourth was Jeremy Pitcher. Rounding out the top five was Tim Schneider.
Doug Williams won a thriller in the 20 lap Mod Lite feature as 18 competitors showed up to fight it out on the CCFS three eighths mile oval. Clayton Brewer finished second followed by John Behron. Rounding out the top five was Matt Magner and Lowell Zehr.
In the 20 lap DIRTcar Stock Car feature, Chris Fisher won for the fourth time at the Cayuga County Fair Speedway. Fisher has been so strong on the high banked CCFS oval for the 2010 season and cut into Mike Welch's point lead with five events left on the season schedule. Second was Andy Fisk followed by Welch. Fourth was Nate Peckham followed by Mike Rasbeck.
In the most exciting race of the night, Chris Bonoffski was able to hold off Nick Werner at the finish as both drivers came up to the start finish side by side with Bonoffski edging out Werner by less than a yard stick at the end of the race. Third was James Werner followed by Mike Ziarno and Karl Werner.
CCFS NOTES: A brief shower hit the CCFS oval about an hour before the program was to begin the track crew, however, did a great job keeping it in racing condition. In fact, it was probably one of the better CCFS surfaces of the 2010 campaign…The points leaders in each of the four classes are as follows. Modifieds-Matt Sheppard; Sportsman-Steve Gray; Stock Cars-Mike Welch and BattleKarz-Nick Werner. Dave Marcuccilli was involved in an early race accident in the DIRTcar Sportsman feature, preventing him from taking four in a row at CCFS…Billy Dunn, who came into last Sunday night's program at CCFS third in DIRTcar Modified track points, was a no-show.
