Add Another to the List: Steve Kinser Wins for First time at Fulton Speedway

Fulton, NY-August 3, 2010- There are not too many tracks on the World of Outlaws circuit that Steve Kinser has not won at, but Fulton Speedway in New York happened to be one of those facilities. Kinser had competed at the high-banked 3/8-mile just once in his career prior to this season, finishing second in 2005. He bettered that one spot in the World of Outlaws return to Fulton Speedway on Tuesday night, picking up the win, which was his seventh of the season.

Kinser started second and chased early leader Doug Esh for the first dozen laps, diving under him coming off turn four on the 13th circuit in lapped traffic. He would lead the remainder of the 30-lap contesting to score the 559th A-Feature win of his illustrious career. Fulton Speedway became the seventh track in the state of New York that Kinser has won at.

"It's great to win anywhere, let alone a place you have never won at," said Kinser.

"We had a good car all night. We felt good hot lapping and just every time we hit the race track and that's the kind of car you want."

Kinser withstood a couple of restarts with three laps to go. First a double file one in which he chose the low side of the track with Jason Sides lining up to his outside. Sides got around him to take the lead on the restart, but before that lap was complete, the caution flew again for a hard crash by Doug Esh in turn one. By way of World of Outlaws rules, the ensuing restart was single file, with Kinser lining up on the pole with Sides second.

"We didn't need that last restart with three to go," explained Kinser. "I went up and jumped the cushion and then Jason (Sides) missed the bottom and gave it back to me and the yellow came out anyway. Then I was still having trouble getting heat in the motor up top, so I came to the bottom on the last lap. I never did really hit a good corner the last two or three laps, but we got the win and that's the main thing."

Kinser started second on Tuesday night and had his son Kraig battling him for that spot in the early going before setting his sights on Doug Esh, who had led from the pole. In lapped traffic Kinser tracked down Esh pretty quick and used a strong run off turn four to take the lead and quickly open a sizeable lead aboard the Bass Pro Shops Maxim.

"I knew the (No.) R19 (Esh) was going to set a good pace and then he got loose pretty quick, and I could work other parts of the track, where he could only run around the top," stated Kinser. "It got quicker on the bottom of (turns) three and four and he never did move down there. The car was pretty good the whole race."

Sides started seventh and ended up second in the Wetherington Tractor Service to earn his 17th Top-Five finish of the season. Sides fell back to eighth at the start and began his march to the front on the eighth lap, first getting around Joey Saldana, before taking sixth two laps later from Paul McMahan. He worked his way into the Top-Five at the halfway point of the 30-lapper.

"We really didn't need that last yellow flag," said Sides. "That last double file restart was going to be good and then we had that crash. Steve (Kinser) kind of slid up and we got by him and I might have been running too hard. He says he could have gotten back by me, but you never know. The car was really good. It was a little tight early, but Doug (Rankin) and Shane (Finch) had the car really good and it came to us there at the end."

Craig Dollansky finished third to earn his second straight podium finish at Fulton Speedway. He has finished fourth or better in all three of his career starts at the high-banked 3/8-mile.

"The track was in pretty good shape given the rain they had," Dollansky noted. "It was pretty racy and we got to pass some cars early. Steve (Kinser) was definitely good and we were trying to battle there for second."

Sides dove under Dollansky with six laps remaining to take the third spot. He moved up to second on the next lap on a double file restart. He lined up behind Kinser on the final restart of the night which was single file and tried everything he could entering turns one and two, but could not get enough of a run to make a bid for the top spot.

"The top was the place to be, kind of screaming around on it," Sides noted. "It was a little greasy, but the more we ran on it, the better it got. We had to kind of took our time and paced ourselves. Overall it was a pretty good night."

Dollansky lined up on the inside of the second row on the final double file restart with three laps remaining and then in the third spot on the single filer that followed.

"I thought I had something on the very last one and we lost some air pressure and it was making it too tight," he said. "We had a real good race car and I was happy with it. In the middle of the race I really thought it was coming to me and then we lost some air pressure. All in all it was a good run for the team."

Kraig Kinser finished fourth on Tuesday night at Fulton Speedway, which was the fourth time in 2010 he has finished in that position aboard the Quaker State Maxim.

Sam Hafertepe Jr., who began the night by setting a new track record in time trials, finished fifth in the Lone Star Speedway Maxim to earn his fifth Top-Five of the season.

Joey Saldana, the current World of Outlaws point leader, finished sixth in the Budweiser Maxim and holds a slim 15-point leader over Steve Kinser in the series championship standings. Paul McMahan came home seventh in the Great Clips Maxim. Jason Meyers came all the way from the 24th starting spot after having to start the back of the field due to switching cars after time trials, to finish eighth to earn the KSE Racing Products Hard Charger Award in the GLR Investments KPC. Donny Schatz was ninth in the Armor All/STP J&J with Lucas Wolfe rounding out the Top-10 in the Allebach Racing Maxim.

The World of Outlaws return to action on Friday, August 6 and Saturday, August 7 in the Second Annual Ironman 55 at I-55 Raceway in Pevely, Missouri.

Tuesday Conversation: Jake Holden

August 03, 2010, 8:07:49 PM | Jesse Cecil

Former Jordan Suzuki and Corona Honda rider Jake Holden campaigned the entire 2009 season out of his own pocket, yet still ended the year tenth in the points. The 2010 season started out much the same, until the M4 Monster Energy Suzuki team gave Holden the opportunity to fill in for John Hopkins, who was recovering from wrist surgery. Holden has made the most of the opportunity since then, steadily increasing his finishing positions from seventh in his first race with the team to fourth at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, the best finish yet for the team’s American Superbike effort. But with Hopkins slated to return to the series at Virginia International Raceway, what does the future hold for Jake?

http://www.roadracerx.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/BJN82125.sized_-199x300.jpgJake Holden • Photo by Nelson/Riles

RRX: How did you initially land the substitute ride with M4?
Well, Hopkins had to get another surgery, and my agent— Murph at Syndicate Motorsports—called me and asked me if I wanted to ride the M4 bike in place of Hopkins. I mean, M4 and [John] Ulrich has always had one of the best programs out there for many years, and has raised a lot of really talented riders out of that team, so I was really excited. Yeah, it was like a blessing, man, I really didn’t know what the heck I was going to do for the rest of the season and I was just trying to go race-by-race with my own money; just trying to find sponsorship. It was really nice to get that phone call.

How do you feel about how your two most recent race-weekends, Mid-Ohio and Laguna Seca, played out?
Mid-Ohio was kind of frustrating because I had the speed to hang with the guys, but just still kind of getting used to the bike, and then on Sunday we had a mechanical issue. Kind of a bummed out weekend, so I was looking forward to Laguna because I’ve always had good success there.

So how did it go at Laguna?
It went really well! I mean, I would have liked to have brought a trophy home. I felt like I could have had it and I just kind of made a couple of mistakes and let Tommy [Hayden] go. We’d made a couple of really big changes to the bike, and I finally got the feeling that I wanted. I was, like, third quickest in most of the sessions, qualified on the front row, and gave them a run for their money in the race. Just kind of fell short of a podium finish, and, you know, fourth place is good for me with a totally new bike at Laguna, and kind of a short period of time to get it all set up. But we made some good changes and got really good feel with the bike.

You’ve had three top-five finishes recently, including a fourth at Laguna Seca. How does it feel to jump on a competitive bike again, and actually be competitive?
It feels really good, but sixth and fifth is not where I want to be. I want to be more toward the front, and to fight for a podium finish. I know the bike is capable, and I know I’m capable of doing it. It’s just trying to get used to a new team, work with a new crew, because every crew, every crew chief is a little different. My crew chief Frank is a good guy, and we’re starting to click. Every time we go out I’m getting quicker on the bike, getting more comfortable.

http://www.roadracerx.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/BJN96620.sized_-300x199.jpgPhoto by Nelson/Riles

Let’s jump back to last year. You pretty much shouldered all your racing expenses and finished tenth in the American Superbike standing. Was it a difficult season for you?
Yeah, it was probably the most difficult season in a long time for me, because I only had one bike, and when you’ve purchased a bike personally you’re kind of out there on the track like, “Man, I can’t throw this away otherwise my weekend’s over.” It just kind of sinks into your head, and all the finances and stuff make you hold back a little bit on the bike and on the track. So it was really tough to push it as hard as I wanted to, but still we ended up getting a couple of good finishes in last part of the year, and it wasn’t too bad. I got to race the full season, and if I’d been stuck sitting at home like a couple of other riders, it would have been really frustrating.

Late last year you took part in the Australian Superbike series for the Phillip Island MotoGP round. How did that experience go?
That was a lot of fun! Phillip Island is one the fastest average-speed tracks on the MotoGP circuit. I mean, it’s fast! This ESG Honda team from Australia wanted an American guy to come over and somehow my name got brought up and, I was like, “Hell yeah I’ll go try it—it’s Phillip Island!” We did okay; I mean, the bikes are similar to my bike; it’s not a true American Superbike, but it’s still fairly even to a superstock bike. I ended up learning the track fairly well and hung with the front guys for a couple of the races, and had some fun. I think I got fourth or fifth in the last race. It was a pretty fun track, and it suited my style. We were sliding around, and it was really fast, so it was a lot of fun.

You started 2010 out funding your own racing again. What were your feelings at the start of the season?
Well, I had a couple of people from the Northwest that were helping me out, and I had entered in the AFM series and the local series up here, WMRRA and OMRA. You know, I had planned on just racing and having fun, and maybe trying to make a couple of bucks doing it if I could, or break even at worst. Another thing is that I just want to race motorcycles! I’m twenty-seven years old and I don’t think my time is over yet for racing motorcycles. I have too much fun doing it, so it’s hard to give it up.

At Auto Club Speedway, riding your CBR1000 from last year, you had some promising results in qualifying and early in the race, but your weekend ended when mechanical issues forced you to retire.
Yeah, we blew a head gasket and it was overheating. but I just kind of showed what I could do on my own personal bike. I was right up there with the mix of the guys, and it felt good to get up there and maybe that is what got me noticed, and that’s why Ulrich wanted to give me shot on his bike

Is it a confidence-boost to take a nearly stock, year-old motorcycle out and stick it to the big teams?
Oh yeah! It’s just funny, because when I was sitting on the grid and looking at the bikes next me—Bostrom’s bike, and Zemke’s—I was like, “Man, I wish I had those brakes, and those wheels.” But you know, the bikes are just so close now, I mean, you could almost run a good Superstock bike in the superbike class and run top-ten every race. It’s tough, yeah, but it’s possible.

Hopkins is slated to return at VIR. Have you had any indications if that’s still the case?
I haven’t heard anything from them. I think Hopkins tested this past weekend, but I haven’t heard anything, so maybe he’s doing okay, then. I’ll be at VIR riding the Harley, and all my gear is still in the trailer, so if they need me I’ll be there!

While racing as a privateer, you received some nice support along the way—I heard a fan even bought tires for you at Infineon.
Oh, yeah! I had fans come up to me at Fontana and pay for a couple sets of tires, and I don’t think they actually realize how much that helped. I didn’t have enough money to pay for the weekend. I was going to have to borrow money from my dad or my friend, and these guys came out of nowhere. I had tire warmers burning up, and people coming over with tire warmers, and it’s just so cool to see true fans trying to help, and it’s great that there are people out there like that. I think the sport is coming up, and the series is getting better and better, and there’s tighter racing, I think it’s going to be going up. I’d just like to thank all the people that stuck behind me, all the Northwest crew up here—we call them NWA, North West Association [laughs]. They’ve helped me out quite a bit. A bunch of friends up here.

Keep up with Jake via his Facebook page.

Highlights of his accomplishments include: 2003 WERA Formula 1 Champion, 2005 Overall Champion CCS Mid-Atlantic and Southeast Region, 2008 ASRA Pro Thunderbike Champion.
