Ø Milestone 1100th AMA Pro K&N Filters Grand National Championship Event to be Held This Weekend

Ø McCreadie Kicks Off USA Nationals With Hard-Fought DIRTcar UMP Late Model Victory
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (August 4, 2010) - AMA Pro Flat Track will conduct a milestone event this weekend with the AMA Pro K&N Filters Grand National Championship presented by Motorcycle-Superstore.com race at Hagerstown Speedway in Hagerstown, MD. This will be the 1,100th Grand National event conducted by AMA Pro Racing.
Of the many different types of motorcycle racing disciplines sanctioned by AMA Pro Racing, the oldest and most traditional is the Grand National Championship. This is a uniquely American style of motorcycle racing that competes on four types of
tracks: quarter-mile, half-mile and one-mile specially prepared dirt oval tracks as well as TT events that use a track configuration with right and left turns along with a jump.
Prior to 1954, the fast and smooth Springfield Mile determined the winner of the coveted AMA Pro National Dirt Track Championship. In 1954, the 18 points-paying race season was introduced. The series was made up of flat track and a number of road race nationals to showcase the versatility of the machines and their riders. As the two disciplines grew, they were eventually split into two distinctly different series.
Leading this year's AMA Pro K&N Filters GNC Twins Championship coming into the historic Hagerstown event is Joe Kopp, the 2000 AMA Pro Grand National Champion followed by 2006 and 2008 Grand National Singles Champion Jake Johnson and 2009 Grand National Champion Sammy Halbert.

While only one race remains for each class in Atlanta Motor Speedway's 2010
Thursday Thunder season, two divisions have tight points races:
John Holleman, of Winston-Salem, NC, holds a
six-point advantage over Madeline Crane of Meansville
in the Morley Company Outlaws. Holleman utilized a
win and fourth-place finish in week nine's races to
surpass Crane in the standings.
William Plemons III and Jacob Armstrong enter
Championship Night tied atop the Dixie Home Crafters Semi-Pro standings, while
Luke Behnke trails behind by a mere six points. Plemons, a Smyrna resident who is competing in his first
full Thursday Thunder season since 1998, claimed a win during week nine's
double features to leap from fourth in the standings.
Fans can also take part in the second Belly Flop Contest of the season.
Featuring big bellies and a small pool, a group of Thursday Thunder fans will
be selected to participate in a mini-pool Belly Flop Contest.
Tickets are just $5 for adults and $1 for children 6-11 (ages 5 and under are free). Gates open at 6 p.m., heat races start at 6:15
p.m., and feature races start at approximately 7:50 p.m. www.atlantamotorspeedway.com
Atlanta Motor Speedway's 13th week of the Friday Night Drags season will
feature 15 classes of high-speed racing on the pit-lane drag strip, and double
points. With only five points races remaining and having competitors clustered
atop the points standings, tension is expected on the track as competitors battle for needed points. In addition to the
drag racing, the event will also include the weekly Show-N-Shine car show with
six classes of show cars, a President's Choice and Student Choice awards.
Atlanta Motor Speedway's Labor Day weekend celebration has grown to four days
with the addition of Breakfast on Bruton, a free Monday-morning breakfast for
fans attending the prior night's NASCAR Sprint Cup race at the fabled 1.54-mile
speedway.
The breakfast will be served on Monday, Sept. 5, in the NASCAR Nationwide
Series garage area from 7:00 a.m. until 9:00 a.m. For a $30 donation to the
Speedway Children's Charities, those in attendance will also be able to drive
their own vehicles around the 1.54-mile oval.
Breakfast on Bruton event sponsors include Bimbo Bakery, Coca-Cola, Minute
Maid, Dixie Paper Products, Wheaties FUEL, the
Georgia Egg Commission, Southerland Foods, Land-O-Lakes, and OCP Angus Farms. www.atlantamotorspeedway.com
After their Grand Opening was rained out Saturday, Needmore Speedway, in Norman Park, GA, will open for the
first race Saturday, Aug. 14. It's a 3/8's mile dirt,
90 ft. wide, banked 9 to 11 degrees all around. It's
located seven miles west of I-75, at exit 49 (that's 49 miles north of the FL
state line).
They have had two practices with a good turnout of cars and fans.
For opening night, the late model race will pay $3000 to win, and the limited
will pay $1000 to win. $500 to win in other classes.
Counts (unofficial) before the rain-out: 129 cars signed in, 6,000 people.

Phillip Swofford, of Bremen, the new leasee and promoter at West Georgia Speedway in Whitesburg,
has given the track a facelift, painting everything and upgrading the
bathrooms, and his first show is Friday.
Swofford has been involved with sportsman class
racing in recent years, and his McKenzie Auto Parts has had a parts trailer at
area tracks for the past two years.
He's making West Georgia into a Friday night track, and will have divisions and
rules similar to Saturday night at nearby Senoia: late models, mod minis,
hobby, B-cadet, pur mini, and enduro
street stocks. He hopes to include a crate class too.
West Georgia was the loser when Senoia went to dirt this year. A low fan and
car count led to a cut in the purse one Sat. night. The next week only five
cars showed, and the track never recovered, even after trying a switch to
Friday nights.
As a sign, Swofford posted on Facebook: "Want to
let all the drivers and fans know that the restrooms will be cleaned every week
and in working order. Will be taking pics of
improvements to the track over the next 3 weeks before we reopen and posting
them on facebook ... no more intermissions"

"Earlier this week, the Associated Press reported that NASCAR has fined
two drivers for speaking negatively about what's going on in the sport. In
other words, the drivers went from being told "Boys, have at it" to
"Boys, just be quiet."
"The drivers being able to speak their minds has
been one of the focal points of the sport. To suddenly decide they are no
longer allowed to do that has me wondering just why NASCAR suddenly can't deal
with the same criticism they've received over the lat
60-plus years."

Rained Out
www.nesmithracing.com
Earl Grubbs, a Malden (MO) Speedway employee was killed Friday night when his
ATV flipped as he push-started a car during a consolation race, halting the
Comp Cams Mid-South Racing Association event. He was a long-time track worker
and 64 years old. The Late Model driven by Daniel Waters was stalled during the
consolation race and Grubbs used the ATV he was riding to push-start the car.
The ATV became hooked to the cars rear bumper on the
backstretch and when the car towing the ATV fired and then picked up speed into
turn three, Grubbs was violently thrown to the track surface.
"The four-wheeler was hooked to the bumper and when he entered turn three,
it threw him off and knocked him out, but the four-wheeler landed on him. It
was a sad, sad deal," said flagman Chris Ellis. (from
www.DirtonDirt.com)
There are few races Ronnie Johnson, of Chattanooga, enjoys winning more than
the Michael Head Jr. Memorial. And he certainly gets a lot of practice at it,
winning again Saturday at Talladega Short Track for his third victory in the
Southern All Star-sanctioned event in the past four years and fourth time
overall.
Johnson started fourth, jumped into the lead on the outside in the early laps
and cruised to a $5,400 victory at the third-mile oval for his series-leading
61st career triumph in the 13th annual event. "Mike (Head) and I have been
very good friends for a lot of years and we've had our share of on-track
battles, too," Johnson said. "I can remember when his son Michael was
coming to the tracks with him and helping to work on the race cars, and this
race has always meant a lot to me. Winning it four times is even more special."
Reigning track champion Tim Busha, of Boaz, AL, took
the runner-up spot from polesitter Stacy Holmes of Munford, Ala., with six laps

D. J. Vanderley claimed his 5th win of the season
Friday night at Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola. Bubba Pollard, of Senoia,
finished the night in third.
In his first start at Iowa Speedway, Chase Elliott dodged a first-lap wreck and

Blue Ox 150.
Elliott's next event will be the fourth pair of races in the Sunoco Gulf
Coast Championship at Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola and Mobile International
Speedway August 13th and 14th. Elliott currently leads the series points.

Poor rules make for poor racing.
There was a good deal of yellow flags today. Almost all were from spins. There
were no serious accidents beyond the numerous spinouts. The flagman was quick
to throw the yellow flag. There was no 'one spin and you're out rule'. The
drivers recognized this. Whenever they 'lost it' or someone else 'turned them'
they waited for the yellow flag to be shown and then moved back on the track.
You can't really blame the drivers for this behavior. If the track had better
rules, there would be far fewer delays. Fewer delays mean happier fans.
However, some tracks 'get it' and many 'don't'. That probably isn't going to
change anytime soon. - Trackchaser Randy Lewis (only
190 US tracks remaining) www.randylewis.org

NEW RICHMOND, WI - Aug. 5, 2010 - Tim McCreadie put $5,000
in his pocket on Thursday night at Cedar Lake Speedway.
Now he’d like to grab a check with one more zero.
A hard-fought victory in Thursday’s 40-lap DIRTcar UMP Late Model A-Main was a
solid first step toward the $50,000 top prize up for grabs in the
three-eighths-mile track’s 23rd annual USA Nationals presented by U.S. Steel
Corporation, which takes center stage with time trials, heat races and a dash
on Friday night (Aug. 6) and the B-Mains and 100-lap World of Outlaws Late Model
Series event on Saturday night (Aug. 7).
McCreadie, 36, of Watertown, N.Y., assured himself a starting spot in Saturday
night’s USA Nationals headliner with his mid-week triumph. The highest finisher
in Thursday’s DIRTcar UMP A-Main who doesn’t qualify for the 100 receives a
provisional to start last in the 26-car field.
“I wish we could carry it all over to tomorrow, but you can only race what’s in
front of you,” said McCreadie, who is currently third in the WoO LMS points standings as he aims to repeat his 2006 title on the
national tour. “At least we know we definitely have a car that’s competitive.
We just gotta do some tricks to hopefully make it good for qualifying tomorrow
night and in the 100-lapper on Saturday.”
McCreadie started from the pole position and led the entire distance in the
Sweeteners Plus Rocket, but he had to hold off challenges from his fellow WoO
LMS regulars Austin Hubbard of Seaford, Del., and Josh Richards of Shinnston,
W.Va., to secure the checkered flag. Richards came from the sixth starting spot
to bid for the lead after the halfway point, but the defending WoO LMS champion
settled for a second place finish after his hopes were hampered by the race’s
lone caution flag on lap 28.
Darrell Lanigan of Union, Ky., finished third, nipping Jimmy Mars of Menomonie,
Wis., by inches at the finish line. Steve Francis of Ashland, Ky., who started
10th, picked up two spots after the lap-28 caution period for the stopped car
driven by Earl Pearson Jr. of Jacksonville, Fla., and completed the top five.
McCreadie was an excited winner after defeating Richards by 0.488 of a second
in a race that at one point had the top-five cars running under a virtual
blanket around the fast, high-banked track.
“Man, this place is aggressive,” said McCreadie, winded after whipping off 40
intense laps in just over 12 minutes. “It got pretty wild out there. I saw
Austin almost by me (with an inside move in turns three and four on lap 17) and
I saw Josh beside me (rounding turns one and two on lap 26), but I just stayed
on the gas up on the cushion and was lucky enough to hold them off.
“I was so good up there in (turns) one and two I didn’t dare to get off it. I
did that once to get under Scott (Bloomquist) when I was trying to lap him and it didn’t work, so I didn’t want to do it again and
cost us a win.”
The caution flag certainly benefited McCreadie, who kept Richards at bay during
the final 12-lap sprint to the finish. Richards, 22, knew his best shot at
unseating McCreadie was lost when the yellow lights blinked on.
“I thought we had a chance because we were reeling (McCreadie) in pretty good
(after reaching second with a lap-21 pass of Hubbard),” said Richards, the
current WoO LMS points leader. “But once the caution came out he got some clean
air and was able to get out there and keep his momentum up.
“We were trying hard – that was one heck of a race,” he added, sweat dripping
from his face during the post-race ceremonies. “I had a lot of fun racing with
Darrell, Timmy, Mars and Austin. If the fans didn’t like that, they should go
somewhere else. That’s about as good as it gets I think.”
A winner for the first time since capturing the WoO LMS ‘Gopher 50’ on July 7
at Deer Creek Speedway in Spring Valley, Minn., McCreadie heads into Friday’s
USA Nationals qualifying program confident about his chances for a five-figure
triumph. He has a solid performance record in the 100-lap event; he was third
last year, fourth in 2005 and 2007 and was leading the race with just 20 laps
to go in 2008 when a broken wheel left him with a heartbreaking 20th-place
finish.
“We’ve had a good car almost every time we’ve been here and that’s a good
feeling,” said McCreadie. “I know there’s places we go
that we struggle, so it’s nice that a big-time paying race is at a track where
I actually feel comfortable.”
Hubbard, who started from the outside pole in his first-ever start at Cedar
Lake, slipped to sixth at the finish. Fifth-starter Rick Eckert of York, Pa.,
placed seventh, five-time USA Nationals winner Billy Moyer of Batesville, Ark.,
advanced from the 12th starting spot to eighth, 18th-starter Shane Clanton of
Fayetteville, Ga., was ninth and Brian Shirley of Chatham, Ill., rounded out
the top 10.
Moyer was fastest in the 53-car qualifying session with a lap of 13.257 seconds.
He started third in the sixth heat, however, because the top-18 qualifiers were
inverted.
Five of the night’s six heat races were won by WoO LMS regulars: McCreadie,
Hubbard, Lanigan, Eckert and Richards. Mars was the only driver to break the
Outlaws’ hold on the prelim checkered flags.
The B-Mains were captured by Brian Birkhofer of Muscatine, Iowa, 2009 WoO LMS
rookie of the year Russell King of Bristolville, Ohio, and Matt Miller of
Waterville, Ohio.
Among the drivers who ran into trouble and didn’t turn a time-trial lap were
WoO LMS veteran Chub Frank of Bear Lake, Pa., and Jonathan Davenport of
Blairsville, Ga. Both racers experienced engine trouble and scratched from the
remainder of the night’s competition.
Jason Feger of Bloomington, Ill., and Dennis Erb Jr. of Carpentersville, Ill. –
the reigning and former DIRTcar Summer Nationals and DIRTcar UMP national
champions, respectively – failed to qualify for the A-Main. Feger missed
transferring by one spot in the first B-Main and Erb finished sixth in the
third last-chance event.
The USA Nationals weekend continues at Cedar Lake Speedway on Friday (Aug. 6)
and Saturday (Aug. 7). The World of Outlaws Late Model Series will sanction the
headline event, which features time trials, heat races and a dash on Friday night and last-chance races and the $50,000-to-win
100-lapper on Saturday evening.
