South Carolina Motor Sports Racing News.com was launched on the web in March of 2001. This idea came about as an additional media to promote and document local short track racing and is the primary emphasis of this website. There is a lot of racing history that goes undocumented and SCMSRN.com feels that it can make a contribution.
Paul J. Miller III, began his motorsports photography career at Florence Motor Speedway in March of 2000. He has been making photographs for over 20 years and considers each day a new assignment. “I’m always looking for ways to use my photographic talents”, says Paul. His current technique is to make the images on 35mm film, scan the image into a computer and then edit the image in Adobe Photoshop. He states, “I like turning my photographs into works of art. With the computer I’m able to achieve in minutes what would normally require hours with a paint brush or in the darkroom.”
Although a majority of work is done in motorsports, there are plans to expand into little league sports, portraiture and pets. All that is needed is for the customer to come forward and make a request.
September 17, 2000, Paul began photographing the students of Buck Baker Racing School. This allows him to provide the students with visual reminders of their attendance at the famous Darlington Raceway.
December 02, 2000, World Cars event at Carolina Motorsports Park. A new opportunity to photograph sports car racing opened up. A new challenge and format to explore and learn from.
March 2001, was covered the historic NASCAR/Craftsman Super Truck race at Darlington Raceway for the Area Auto Racing News.
June 2001, began coverage of racing at I-20 Speedway in Batesburg, SC.
Paul is a member of the Sumter Artist Guild, the International Freelance Photographers Organization and the South Carolina Bluegrass and Traditional Music Association.
September 2001, covered the Mountain Dew Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway for Area Auto Racing News.
December 2001, attended NASCAR Goody’s Dash Banquet in Winston Salem North Carolina.
February 2002, began covering kart racing at Sunshine Kartway in St. Matthews, SC.
April 2002, became the track photographer for Sumter Speedway. Also this month, he was invited to address the Sumter Camera Club.
Additional 2002 accomplishments: Began sending images of FMS and Sumter Speedway to RacingNews so the local racers could get more exposure in the printed media. Had some images of Frank Sessoms published in theState newspaper (they failed to give me credit). Represented Area Auto Racing News again this season covering the Mountain Dew, Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway.
2003 Accomplishments: Covered Talladega Short Track, Ice Bowl 2003 and the 3rd Annual Winter Classic at Columbus Mississippi. Also began contributing images to ChasinRacin.com. Resumed activity in music, by taking piano lessons.
Future projects include work in journalism, related to motor sports. Self-motivation and teaching himself is what inspires him. His goal is to provide the customer with attractive images that will promote their own talent and provide a lasting memory of their participation. Additionally, Paul plans to continue as track photographer at Florence Motor Speedway for the 2001 season.
