Jan.
06, 2001, Florence, S.C.
This evening the Division Champions of Florence Motor Speedway and Summerville Speedway received their awards for the 2000 season. It was a packed house at the GE Building as competitors, families and friends gathered for the celebration. Race promoter, Charlie Powell and Master of Ceremonies, A.J. Rodonis spoke of next years events, announced the winners, and handed out the awards. Each division champion commented on the competition, thanked their supports and accepted their rewards of an exciting season of racing on the local level.
With the popularity of racing on the national level it seems that the local racers go unnoticed. It is those local racers that may move on to national events. One such driver that has done so is Ron Barfield. Ron spoke to the group about some of his experiences that lead him to his present accomplishment as a NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series driver. With his words of encouragement there will surely be someone else from this group who will rise to the next level. There certainly is the talent among any of the award winners.
One of those may be Danny Sammons, at the age
of 16 years piloted a Late Model Super Truck to a second place finish in the
points standings. Danny will be moving
on the Hooters All-Pro Cup Series in 2001 and without doubt will be a
contender. Having only driven in the
LMST Series for one year and achieving his results, is evidence of his
abilities.

The Crowning achiever of the Late Model Super Truck Series was Cameron Norris, from Leland, North Carolina. Norris provided a descriptive account of his record that provided a goal for is competitors to strive for. With the tremendous effort from a much smaller crew and budget than his competitors he was able to achieve the result that can only be described as awesome. Norris contributed much of his success to the efforts of his crew chief John Boney and family of crew members. Congratulations Mr. Norris and Crew, good luck in 2001.
The Late Model Super Truck Series will return to Florence Motor Speedway and Summerville Speedway in 2001, racing on alternate weekends at each track. The Trucks generate the most excitement of all the divisions of racing but do not dominate, as the others generate their own unique brand of competition.
