Let's try to get some things
organized and answered as we head into the pre-season.
First, SPEED has committed to streaming all three days of the Daytona test
online at the SPEED.com website live. There will be some TV as well, but the
network is in the middle of a big Barrett-Jackson auction that was arranged
well in advance of the Daytona pavement problems.
Here is the three day schedule:
Thursday, Jan. 20
9 a.m. - 12 p.m. (SPEED.com)
1 p.m. - 5 p.m. (SPEED.com)
5 p.m. - 7 p.m. (same-day delay) (SPEED TV)
Friday, Jan. 21
9 a.m. - 12 p.m. (SPEED.com)
1 p.m. - 2 p.m. (SPEED TV)
2 p.m. - 5 p.m. (SPEED.com)
Saturday, Jan. 22
9 a.m. - 12 p.m. (SPEED.com)
1 p.m. - 2 p.m. – (SPEED TV)
2 p.m. - 5 p.m. – (SPEED.com)
The coverage is going to include on-track cameras live at a test for the first
time in my memory. John Roberts and Jeff Hammond are going to host from the
infield TV studio right above Victory Lane that SPEED has used in the past for
testing review shows.
Steve Byrnes returns to a familiar role up in the TV booth with Darrell Waltrip
and Larry McReynolds alongside. It will be Krista Voda and Bob Dillner working
the garage area as reporters. That is one stellar line-up for Internet
streaming coverage.
What should be fun to watch is the format. There are normally no commercials in
this type of coverage because it can be viewed worldwide. American TV
commercials are normally targeted at a group, time period or demographic. What
is on sale in the US may not be on sale in Canada or Australia. Therefore, most
current TV commercials don't work online.
The on-air vibe may be quite different as well. Without trying to rush five
minute segments between commercials, the webcast producer and director may find
that they have many more tools at their disposal. In this format, there is no
clock constantly ticking down to the next time the TV monster must be fed.
SPEED also returns Mr. Byrnes as the host of Race Hub on the Monday after
testing. I am told the show will again be at 7PM for one hour on Monday through
Thursday. No word on the time of the West Coast re-air as the
SPEED website does not have full January schedules up quite yet.
SPEED is now setting its number of cable homes at 82 million for the start of
2011. That is a solid number and if the former niche network can get together
the right group of compelling programming, it could be a big year for SPEED.
Over on ESPN2, it looks like NASCAR Now will return on Monday, February 7, 2011. The
first week of shows are all thirty minutes, with the
one-hour Monday roundtable returning on February 14. Allen Bestwick, Nicole
Briscoe and Mike Massaro are back, but missing from the team will be Ray
Evernham.
Click
here or go to the previous story on this blog for the details. Evernham is
moving off to work for Rick Hendrick developing a line of high-performance
parts and vehicles. In addition, Evernham still has plenty on the table with
ownership of a local dirt track in North Carolina and several other business
interests.
There is no word yet from ESPN on whether they will replace Evernham or use
existing analysts in his role on NASCAR Now and selected races.
As we mentioned before, no changes in the on-air line-ups for ESPN, FOX or
SPEED. Charlotte Observer reporter Jim Utter passed along that Jim Shiftan is
going to be producing for ESPN this season on the NASCAR beat. Good guy, liked by the crew and perhaps open to some new
approaches to aspects of the coverage.
Brief Notes:
Don't forget Sunday at 6PM there is a new motorsports series on VERSUS called Dirt Knights.
They also have a Facebook page, website and Twitter account if you want to
check what they are about. The first show was solid, this is a grassroots
racing effort to get a TV series on the air and we wish them the best of luck.
Information came in late Wednesday night from SPEED about the Chili Bowl. This
unique indoor event takes place in late January in Tulsa, OK. It features USAC
midget racers from all over the nation competing in endless heats leading up to
a big final race. Something fun in the off-season with a
strong tradition of racing. SPEED will carry an edited highlight program
in February. Times and date has not yet been announced. Good news.
We will update any additional breaking TV or media news on this post all day
Thursday. As always, we welcome your comments on any of these topics. Just

Tuesday afternoon Ray Evernham
made official what many already knew. He was going to partner with Rick
Hendrick on a project involving high-end autos.
Here is the official information from the media release:
Ray
Evernham Enterprises (REE) has been retained to consult for the Hendrick
Companies, a management company formed in 2005 to oversee strategic initiatives
for chairman Rick Hendrick.
Founded
in 2008 by successful auto racing crew chief, team owner and broadcaster Ray
Evernham, REE will consult on special projects related to Hendrick’s core
businesses. In that role, REE’s initial focus will be development of the
Hendrick Performance retail brand of high-performance parts, vehicles, products
and related services.
While this release did not specifically indicate that Evernham was done with
TV, these tweets came shortly after the announcement from various members of
the ESPN Motorsports team.
Andy Hall (PR
Rep): Congratulations to Ray Evernham - we'll miss him at ESPN.
Jamie Little:
Congrats to the great Ray Evernham. New opportunity! Your ESPN family will miss
you!
Allen Bestwick:
My friend has some great things ahead. Thanks for bringing it! We'll keep that
song going for ya...
Marty Smith:
Huge congratulations to Ray on the new gig at Hendrick Performance, but dang
we'll miss him on the television. That dude is great on TV!
Ryan McGee:
Congrats to Ray on new consultant gig w/Hendrick!.
Will he still take me to the Knoxville Nationals this summer?
The choice that Evernham made has already brought plenty of comments and email
related to Dale Earnhardt Jr. and his struggling fortunes in the Sprint Cup
Series. While no public statement was made on that topic, the media release
indicated that Evernham would be working in a non-racing role for a different division
of the Hendrick organization.
Still, the words "initial focus" in the release leave
the door open for Evernham to have flexibility in the overall organization. We
all know that successful owners exhaust every resource when they are trying to
get a major team back on track.
In the short term, it's the fans and TV viewers who are going to take a step
back. Evernham settled into his role in the ESPN studios on Monday as a part of
NASCAR Now quite
well. He and Ricky Craven partnered up to present a formidable studio pairing
that really clicked on the air.
Allen Bestwick hosted the programs and when a character like Randy LaJoie was along for the ride it made for a fast-paced and
informative hour. Bestwick drew a lot of NASCAR knowledge from Evernham, who
switched hats between analyst, owner and former crew chief in the blink of an
eye.
ESPN also used Evernham in the field, but with less success. The infield duo of
Brad Daugherty and Rusty Wallace often spoke over top of Evernham when he
joined them on race telecasts. While Bestwick as host tried to keep order, the
enthusiasm level of Daugherty and Wallace often eclipsed their level of
knowledge. It was clear where Evernham should have been from the start and that
was up in the TV booth.
Andy Petree has been ESPN's primary NASCAR analyst since the new TV contract in
2007. Petree's role was not going to change and ESPN
needed only one former crew chief in the TV booth. Evernham was the odd man
out. Although his relief appearances in that role worked out well, Evernham was
not going to replace Petree in the ESPN package.
Since this situation has been playing out, there has been a senior management
change at SPEED. Patti Wheeler, Humpy's daughter, is a veteran TV executive who
lives in the same area as Evernham. She now runs SPEED's programming and
production divisions. In the blink of an eye, she can offer him a role on Race Hub that
involves only a short drive to the SPEED studios from his home or job.
Also right down the street is the Sirius NASCAR studios. Evernham has a regular
weekly role on Sirius Speedway with Dave Moody, so it should be
interesting to see if Sirius tries to get him more involved on the satellite
radio side of the business.
On a personal note, Evernham has been supportive of this website and it has
been very pleasant dealing with both Ray and his wife over the past several
years. Even if he drops from sight for a while, keep an eye out for Evernham to
resurface in either a media or racing role. You know what they say, it's in his
blood.

The week started off with a
bang in TV land! Our friends at SPEED are changing things up this season for
the January Daytona testing.
Here is the schedule from SPEED. It includes a mix of Internet streaming and
TV:
Thursday, Jan. 20
9 a.m. - 12 p.m. (SPEED.com)
1 p.m. - 5 p.m. (SPEED.com)
5 p.m. - 7 p.m. (same-day delay) (SPEED TV)
Friday, Jan. 21
9 a.m. - 12 p.m. (SPEED.com)
1 p.m. - 2 p.m. (SPEED TV)
2 p.m. - 5 p.m. (SPEED.com)
Saturday, Jan. 22
9 a.m. - 12 p.m. (SPEED.com)
1 p.m. - 2 p.m. – (SPEED TV)
2 p.m. - 5 p.m. – (SPEED.com)
Here is the official info that came out Monday afternoon:
SPEED
and SPEED.com are presenting 23 hours of live testing coverage from Daytona
Jan. 20-22 as the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series engines roar back to life in the
month of January for the first time in three years.
“The most important thing we do at SPEED is cover the NASCAR
season from the minute the cars first hit the track until the champion makes
his acceptance speech at the banquet each year and everything in between,” said
SPEED President Hunter Nickell. “We’re psyched that we get to start a little
earlier now that Daytona testing is back, and based on what we heard from
drivers at the Goodyear tire test in December, this is one test session you
won’t want to miss.”
John Roberts and Jeff Hammond host SPEED’s on-air coverage
from the studio above Victory Lane at Daytona. Steve Byrnes, Larry McReynolds
and Darrell Waltrip will offer analysis throughout the practice sessions with
reporting by Bob Dillner and Krista Voda. SPEED.com is presenting live
streaming of all on-track activity with the exception of 3-5 p.m. ET Thursday,
and will feature a rotation of on-air personalities.
Daytona testing coverage gives fans their first extended
look at the new race surface at Daytona International Speedway -- a surface the
racers expect will add to the level of excitement in February.
“It’s basically like going to a new track,” said four-time
Cup Series champion Jeff Gordon, following the recent tire test. “What our
engineers can do now with the cars is a lot more aggressive and totally
different from what we have had in the past ... Now, it is all about speed, and
I think it will make for more exciting race, more aggressive racing. I think
you will be able to see us race three-wide lap after lap after lap.”
It looks like SPEED is trying to balance a Barrett-Jackson auction and Daytona
testing with just one TV channel. This streaming is a great experiment and it
should be interesting to see how mainstream NASCAR fans react to this approach.

The Daytona International
Speedway is ready to go. The Preseason Thunder Fan Fest will kick-off the 2011
season. Thursday through Saturday, January 20 - 22, various teams will take to the
new pavement for testing mixed with autograph signings and question and answer
sessions for the fans on hand. Tickets are $20.
In addition to these activities, January 21 will bring a press conference
featuring NASCAR Chairman Brian France. It is in Daytona's Infield Media Center
that France is supposed to officially unveil the rules changes for 2011. It's
quite possible that the Chase for the Championship format and some significant
Nationwide Series rules changes will be announced. France will also interact
with the media for questions on those topics and more.

Thursday, January 20th. The only NASCAR-related program is a replay of the
Sprint Cup Series race from Talladega at noon. Friday, there are no NASCAR
shows on the schedule. Saturday, Race in 60 replays appear in the
early morning hours. There is no other NASCAR programming on the schedule.
That seems a bit strange, because various on-air talent from SPEED have been
saying on social media outlets that they are bound for Daytona to handle
extensive coverage of this rather historic test. In the past, that coverage has
consisted of a nightly review show featuring interviews.
In the new world order of online everything and total coverage, it would only
make sense to try and start the season off with some bonus coverage so fans
could see cars on the new pavement for the first time. Click here for a short
video from a fan during the Goodyear tire test in December. Turn it up.
Not only is there no mention of the January test on the SPEED website, but
surfing over to the NASCAR.com site will reveal the same thing. NASCAR.com was
said to be increasing online video streaming this season of events just like
this. Hassles over contracts and financial demands have kept fans in the dark
for years where Internet video and NASCAR are concerned.
While NASCAR.com ended the season by streaming the final few races, there has
been nothing released in reference to new plans for 2011. We were hoping for
online video offerings of practice, qualifying and races. To say NASCAR is
behind the curve on this one is being polite.
Over on Facebook, there is no mention of January Daytona plans on the SPEED
page. There is, however, a 65% off sale at the SPEED pit shop. At the NASCAR
Facebook page, there is no testing info for the over one million followers.
Finally, DIS is just wrapping up KartWeek, so there
are pictures of AJ Allmendinger in a go-kart but no testing coverage
information.
It's been quite a while since NASCAR last turned a wheel on TV at Homestead.
The December tire test was closed to the media. Two and a half weeks from now
will be the first opportunity for NASCAR to show its stars on its most famous
track and start the season with a bang.
Let's hope that NASCAR, SPEED and NASCAR.com can get on board and step-up to
the challenge of offering more TV, online streaming and social media coverage
as the sport begins a critical year.
We will update on this post any additional information that comes in on this

It's been an off-season loaded
with TV news and topics of interest. On this last day of 2010, take another
peek at some key issues and feel free to leave a comment.
Just click on the title to read the story:
SPEED Will Not Be The
NASCAR Network - The new shows for next season have been
announced and NASCAR is not well represented. More lifestyle
and enthusiast series with none of them about NASCAR. So
much for the rumor that it was going to be all NASCAR in 2011.
Can A Video Game Save
NASCAR? - The new "NASCAR 2011: The Game" is
headed our way in February and the sport has a lot riding on the reception. The
designers say the game is off the charts, but some folks are wondering if COT's
will excite younger fans.
With Howard Stern Deal
Done It's NASCAR Time - Sirius
made it official, re-signing Howard Stern and making his show available online
as well. Recently, Sirius made a new deal with the NFL that also allows for
online streaming. The only major piece of the puzzle missing is NASCAR. It
needs to happen now.
The Ethanol Time Bomb
- Mainstream media is silent as Ford, Chevy and Toyota sue the EPA to
prevent E15 gasoline from being distributed nationally. This is the same E15
that NASCAR just signed as a key sponsor and will run in all three national
series in 2011. Good move for NASCAR or worst decision in history of the sport?
Can ESPN Save The
NASCAR Hall Of Fame? - There are lots of suggestions on how
to increase attendance at this attraction. Why not enlist NASCAR's biggest TV
partner and let TV save the day? It makes a lot of sense.
Does The Sprint Cup
Series Banquet Belong On TV? - Even with the move to Las
Vegas the post-season function has no zip on TV. Does NASCAR need to tailor
this event to please the fans or should this be a night for sponsors and teams?
NASCAR Fans About To
Be Rebranded - 2011 will bring a new approach to dealing
with the public, the media and the fan base. NASCAR is leaning on a group of
brand marketers to revamp the sport's public image. These guys talk the talk,
but now they have to walk the walk. It's showtime!
Hail To The Chief
- NASCAR Chairman Brian France says everything is fine in TV land, the
Chase is the best format and nothing major needs to change for 2011. I'll have
some of what he's having please!
Thanks for stopping by The Daly Planet in 2010! Next season will mark our fifth
year of this media project. It never would have worked without your
participation. It should be very interesting to see what 2011 brings.

You can look all you want on
the VERSUS.com homepage for motorsports and all you will find is old IndyCar
highlights. Only by typing "Dirt Knights" into the search box will
the website reveal the new motorsports series that will open 2011 for racing
fans starved for anything of substance.
This time of year, ESPN is long gone to college sports while SPEED is deep
inside the endless replays of Barrett-Jackson auctions and assorted lifestyle
shows. You have to wonder just how many times each episode of PINKS has been aired?
It seems ironic that a new homegrown TV series centered around some dirt track
racers on VERSUS would be first out of the blocks. Click here to view the
promo for Dirt Knights
on YouTube. This show seems to have the same feel of THC's Madhouse without
all the phony acting between the racing sequences.
Corey Dripps, Scott Green, Al Hejna,
Mike Spaulding and Jon Tesch are the Dirt Knights.
They race in the Unites States Modified Touring Series (USMTS) and are looking to transfer their love
of racing through the TV show.
"This is a project that has been in the works for more than two years
now," said Dripps in a media release. "For
some, racing is a hobby and for others it’s how we make our living, but either
way, we all love and respect this sport. We hope that people will tune in and
be entertained, but at the same time we want to
convey what the racing life is really all about."
That just might be music to the ears of race fans who
have been left scratching their heads over the lack of this type of programming
on SPEED. In the meantime, VERSUS picked-up a Whelen Modified package last
season and also carried the Quest for the Cup show during the Chase for the
Championship. Now, that network expands again with an exclusive new series that
already has fans buzzing.
the Dirt Knights Facebook
page. Even before a single episode of the show has aired, there are over 13
thousand fans along for the ride. Click
here for the Dirt Knights website, where much more content will be
unveiled down the road. Right now, it contains a preview of the debut episode.
There is a lot of heart and soul in this TV effort. It's not a high-priced
production company trying to manufacture drama or get ratings. It's a group of
real racers putting themselves out there for all to see for better or worse.
This is their money, their effort and the result of their hard work. What
better story is there to tell?
Sunday at 6PM ET is the first airing and don't miss it because there is no West
Coast re-air that night. VERSUS is kind of strange like that as the network's
Comcast owners continue to try and figure out how to program a cable network.
Each of the 13 Dirt Knights shows will be one hour long and it should be
a kick to see this grassroots series finally on TV.
Clicking around the Internet can bring a lot more information about the drivers
and series. Each driver has a website and the show is being discussed on
motorsports forums all around the web.
Without a drop of NASCAR to be found on TV, Dirt Knights has chosen a nice time
to debut the series. It might not be for everyone, but getting some original
programming at this time of the year is a nice touch. Perhaps this can inspire
other drivers and owners to get together and bring more stories of real racers
to national TV.

The off-season has been
strangely quiet on the NASCAR TV front. As if we needed a reminder, both the
Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series struggled on TV. The trucks again escaped that
fate, content with a smaller package on SPEED that continued to return
consistent ratings.
In the past, ESPN has announced changes in on-air talent shortly after the
final race of the season in Homestead. This year, there was silence. For those
who believed the new president of FOX Sports, Eric Shanks, might change some
faces in the NASCAR on FOX line-up, he has not even addressed that topic.
So, it looks like FOX opens Daytona with Darrell Waltrip doing double-duty in
the Hollywood Hotel and then the broadcast booth. Chris Myers has wrapped his
first season of Inside NASCAR for Showtime and he is set to return as the
NASCAR on FOX host.
Jeff Hammond has been a consistent presence for SPEED on Race Hub, the
studio news and interview show. With that series returning on January 24 with
host Steve Byrnes, fans should have several weeks of seeing Hammond before
Speedweek rolls around.
Byrnes is intending to pull his own double-duty early in the year. He will host
Race Hub
Monday through Thursday, then travel to the FOX Sprint Cup Series weekends and
return to his role as a pit reporter. SPEED has yet to announce if Byrnes will
also work any practice or qualifying sessions. Krista Voda, John Roberts and
Mike Joy filled that role once Byrnes left last season.
That puts Mike Joy back in the booth with Waltrip and Larry McReynolds. Voda,
Byrnes, Matt Yocum and Dick Berggren are the pit road gang while Myers and
Hammond man the Hollywood Hotel.
On the Nationwide side, ESPN seems set to return Marty Reid to his play-by-play
role with Dale Jarrett and Andy Petree alongside. Allen Bestwick, Brad Daugherty
and Rusty Wallace should man the Infield Pit Studio. Jamie Little, Dr. Jerry
Punch, Vince Welch and Dave Burns are the pit road reporters.
The unknown in the ESPN equation is Ray Evernham. If he has made up his mind
whether or not to return to TV in 2011, he has not passed it along. Evernham
was said to finally be free of his legal ties to RPM and was mulling his
future.
The truck series on SPEED also appears to have no changes. Rick Allen, Phil
Parsons and Michael Waltrip are the team in the booth while Adam Alexander and
Ray Dunlap report from pit road. Krista Voda is the pre-race host.
While SPEED has committed to the January test at Daytona, the network has still
not released the talent line-up or the specifics of the planned mix of TV and
rumored online streaming coverage. In the past, these shows have consisted of
recaps after the fact because no TV production trucks were on-site to cover the
track. It should be interesting to see what SPEED can do this season,
especially with streaming coverage.
Behind the scenes, veteran Charlotte Observer reporter Jim Utter passed along
that he was told James "Shifty" Shiftan will step into the ESPN race
producer role vacated with the removal of Neil Goldberg last season. Shiftan
took a leave of absence from NASCAR last year, leaving Coordinating Producer
Jill Fredrickson to produce the final races.
So, as we make the turn and head once again into another NASCAR season it's
very quiet in the TV world. It might just be that the NASCAR TV partners are
trying to let the memories of 2010 slip away before turning their attention to
the new Daytona pavement. Sometimes in TV land, silence really is golden.

You might not know her name or
even her face. FOX, ESPN and TNT don't know she exists. She has never won a
major NASCAR race. She does not live in North Carolina. She does not sacrifice
her dignity in TV commercials. She does not have a rich family.
Yet, Jennifer Jo Cobb has some of the most loyal fans in NASCAR. Cobb races
full time in the Camping World Truck Series and runs a limited schedule on the Nationwide side. Although she has not yet won, to many fans
that is not important.
In a racing world of egos and millionaires, Cobb is a refreshing change. Since
her entry into the truck series, Cobb has chronicled her NASCAR experiences
firsthand. Using her marketing and journalism background, Cobb has sidestepped
the mainstream NASCAR media and created a direct link with her fans.
There is perhaps no better example in NASCAR of someone who has used social
media, amateur NASCAR blogs and the Internet to develop effective sponsor
exposure and a strong fan base. All of this is necessary due to one well-known
fact.
"No one covers trucks, they just don't," said a popular NASCAR
journalist to me in November. The drivers who get the most attention on TV in
the truck races are the cross-overs from the Sprint
Cup Series. Kyle Busch and Kevin Harvick are big draws when they race a truck.
For a single truck team owner/driver like Cobb, there is simply little help
with exposure from the NASCAR media.
Cobb's answer was to make it personal. She has a thriving community on Facebook
of pages for both her race team and for herself as a driver. On Twitter, Cobb
speaks easily with fans and has created lasting bonds with many. The Internet
is full of NASCAR blogs with stories and features on Cobb.
Here are just a few. Click on the title to read the story.
Jennifer
Jo Cobb Is Quietly Making A Name For Herself from Female Racing News.com in
October.
Jennifer Jo Cobb's Big Night Out from Corrina B's World in November.
Women
In NASCAR Series: Jennifer Jo Cobb from Skirts and
Scuffs in October.
Beyond The Cockpit:
Jennifer Jo Cobb from Frontstretch in April.
The bottom line is that there has never been a better time for a female driver
to make inroads in the sport. Even with 50% of the fan base being female, it's
apparent that Danica Patrick did not click with the stock car set.
Cobb has a racing heritage from the Kansas City area where her father still
battles on the dirt at Lakeside Speedway. Unlike Danica, fans have been able to
watch Cobb make her way into the sport and interact with her from the start.
We all know the big sponsors in NASCAR, but there is
just something about an owner/driver who started out with sponsorship from the
Kansas City T-Bones Baseball Club, Wagner's Collision Repair and Take-N-Bake
Pizza. Cobb is old school and makes no bones about where she came from and
where she wants to go.
This year, some help did come from SPEED. The network televises the Camping
World Truck Series and featured Cobb dressed as Ginger in the annual Halloween
pre-race show. It got Cobb some TV exposure, but more than that it showed her
as someone who gets it. A driver not too self-important to
poke fun at themselves.
Tuesday, Cobb continues to leverage her position in the sport by appearing on
CNN. In the 10PM ET Anderson Cooper 360 show, Cobb
will be talking about the very different lifestyle that she has chosen both on
and off the track. It's ironic that during the dark time for NASCAR on TV, the
only person getting national TV exposure is a mid-pack single team truck series
owner/driver.
In February, Cobb is set to make another splash when she shows up in NASCAR 2011: The
Game. The new official NASCAR video game offering will have
Cobb in the #13 red Ford Fusion with her own racing apparel company on the hood
as the sponsor. This will put Cobb on the track with the big boys on gaming
systems around the world.
There are plenty of young female drivers currently lurking just outside the
three major NASCAR series. There is little doubt that they are watching Cobb
navigate her way through the sport in control of her own team with financial
and management responsibility. In this changing economy, Cobb may just be
laying down a blueprint for female drivers to follow in the future.
